A buddy of mine just bought a Savage 10fxp3 from Wallyworld and had a few questions about it that I couldn't answer. Apparently it has an internal box (?) magazine that holds 4 rounds. My buddy was wondering if the ammo capacity was just 4 rounds or if it was 4 +1. Also while fiddling around with it last night he noticed the bolt wouldn't come up if the safety was set on "fire". My FN .308 allows me to function the bolt if the safety is on "fire". Is this a feature of Savage rifles or could it be that he's just a little mistaken on how the bolt operates. It's the synthetic stock, scoped, accutrigger .308 model if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

3 position safety: 1st safety on can't fire can't move bolt, 2nd position safety on, but bolt operation is allowed, 3rd safety off you can fire at will :D

Yeah, I didn't know if you could load one in the chamber directly and close the bolt over the cartridge rim.

It you think about it for a moment: The bolt will close over the 'rim' whether the cartridge came from the magazine or not. It has to do that to 'get it out' later.

I know that :)

What I meant was I didn't know if it would damage the extractor if it had to jump over the rim when the cartridge was placed directly into the chamber. I know it's a non-issue with some rifles but on others it's a complete no-no.

On all push feed rifles the extractor pops over the case head when the bolt closes. Controlled feed actions capture the round as it comes up from the magazine

In order for it to be 4+1, you would have to hold the top round down as you close the bolt so you dont get a double feed. :)
