I've got a friend who is selling off her late father's possessions, and she asked if I was interested in the firearms. In the bunch is an old Ithaca SxS 12 gauge shotgun. The barrels have "nitro steel" on them, but I can't find the length of the shell - is this going to be a 2 and 3/4 shell? And is it safe to shoot modern stuff in it?

Not super familiar with older shotguns, so thanks for whatever you can tell me. I'd like to get it, but I don't want a wall hanger.

Pre WW2 Ithaca hammerless SxS models, These numbers are close but not exact....

serial number
Crass 6500-55000
Lewis 55000-112000
Minier 112000-160000
Flues 175000-400000
NID Over 425000

All gauges had factory 2 3/4in chambers by mid 20s ....in the late Flues years....any competent gunstore can measure the chamber...and tell you if its in good working condition..
