I just got a Springfield Armory XDs 4" in 45acp. Love the gun and the way it shoots,BUT The mag release is extremely hard to push in...no way in a bad situation would I be able to disengage the spent mag with just my thumb quickly. Is it a matter of breaking in, is it the mag? Also the slide release has a sharp corner that rakes against my thumb when shooting, very much a pain after just one mag shooting. Would I need to have a gunsmith look at it, should I just file it down ( I hate to mess it up any)? It's quite a point...surprised it's even like that. Otherwise a great gun!

Yes, I think break in is all you need to do. Mine was stiff in the beginning but is just fine now. 493 down the pipe.
I feel the point that you are talking about. You are resting your thumb way too high on top of the slide release. Try resting your thumb in the indention right behind the trigger. In fact both of your thumbs should be parallel and pointed forward.

^^^^This. Except I would add that when shooting mine I try to keep my thumbs off the gun completely, or I tend to hit the slide release, and the slide doesn't lock back on the last shot.

Also, my mag release was really stiff when I first got it too, but is fine now. You may have a rough spot where it interacts with the magazine. Look closely, and check that the catch on your mags aren't buggered up. play with the gun a lot and it will probably loosen up.
