I just purchased a Savage 110 in a 308 with a 1 in 10 twist. I reload my own ammo and I have been shooting a Speer 168 gr bullet and a Berger 168 grain bullet. I have been using H4895 as a powder and although my last gun was a Thompson Center and it shot very well I was wondering what to expect with the Savage it has a 26" barrel. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

As you may notice I am brand new to this.

To: The Dom Father thanks I looked at your post and will save I want to go over it again. Thanks for the information.

if your rifle doesn’t shoot well with that load, don’t discount it as being inaccurate. The 308 can eat a lot of different powders. You should shoot at least 3 different powders and 3 bullet weights before giving up on the gun. Might get lucky on the first try though. 168 and H-4895 is kind of a standard choice for 308 performance.

Every Savage .308 I've owned (4 now) has liked 150 grain bullets better than anything else. H4895 is just fine btw.

I agree. While I hope the bullets you have shoot great, my savage .308 with 1:10 twist also loves 150gr bullets. I use varget and my gun is very happy.

All of my testing has been done with 168gr bullets. I have tested Hornday BTHP Match, ELD-M, Berger VLD, Sierra SMK and now Sierra TMK. I have tested CFE 223, AR-COMP, Varget, IMR 8208-XBR and Benchmark. If you look at my youtube there is a .308 win load development playlist that has capture alot of my testing with the various projectiles and powders.

Now if you look at the back of the Savage manual they will tell you that they test that barrel with the 168gr Sierra Match King. I had been shooting that projectile for a while on IMR 8208-XBR. the challenge was it did not perform very well beyond 600 yards. I am now shooting the 168 Tipped Match King which has a much higher BC and I just took it out to 1000 yards this past monday and it did very well, not 6.5 Creedmoor well but much better than the traditional match king. I am using Lapua .308 Win Palma Small primer brass with the small flash hole, Federal 205M primer and 42.5gr of Benchmark which gets that out the barrel at abou 2750fps.

Hope that helps.
