First time doing rifle on this press. I was attempting to throw 23.5 grains of AA2230 for .223.

Wide open I could barely get 21.5 grains. In my mind I thought I remembered the small powder thrower was good to 25 grains? Not only could I not get 23.5 grains, the charges I threw were inconsistent.

I tried TAC too with the same results.

I think I read the powder throw is less consistent wide open.

I’m guessing tomorrow I’ll be putting the large powder throw in.

There’s a range it’s good for, but dependent on powder type as well. Remember it’s a volumetric throw so will depend on the powder’s characteristics. I use the large powder bar. Good luck.

Both AA2230 and TAC are fine powders that look like they should meter well.

For some reason (apparently I was wrong) that the small powder throw was good to 25 grains, thought I had read it in the Dillion literature or on THR. Not the first, or last time I’m wrong.

Dillon Precision manufactures four types of powder bars. 1. Extra Small – use for dropping less than 3 grains of powder 2. Small – use for dropping 3 to 20 grains of powder 3. Large – use for dropping 20 to approximately 45 to 50 grains of powder 4. Magnum – use for dropping 50 or more grains of powder The extra small powder bar is used when loading .32 Auto, .32 S&W and .32 SWL. Both the extra small powder bar and the magnum powder bar are non-standard items and are ordered separately. The large and small powder bar are standard equipment and are included with every reloader.

This is from the Dillon 550b manual.....^^^^^

I have got the small bar to deliver 25gr of H335 fairly consistently, but using the large bar is SPOT on - every time....:)

You'll do better with the large bar, much much better. If you've not ever used your large powder bar yet, give it a quick once over with super fine sand paper. I always try and use the large powder bar if possible, especially with the finer powders (like H110 for example). The dillon range for the small is up to 20, and over 20 for large, but that is totally powder dependent. My large bars will generally throw about 14 H110 for example. So switch to the large and give it another shot.

I READ THAT BEFORE!!!

And my memory failed me!

And I had the Dillion instruction manual within 4 feet of where I was messing with the press yesterday.

Update:

I put the large powder drop in today and all went well.

I loaded about 90 62 gr BT-FMJ with 24.0 grains of TAC. 2.250 OAL.

Only had time to shoot them for function. They ejected and locked back the bolt on an old Hbar.

I’ll get my butt to the range here pretty soon and see how they do in a variety of guns.
