I'm getting ready to submit a form 1 for one of my lowers. In searching for an engraver I stumbled across a site called New World Ordinance. They had the following warning posted:

"WARNING !: Don’t get duped into taking your firearm to an unlicensed engraver.

A federal firearms license (FFL) is needed to perform engraving services on firearms as a business. There are several engraving companies who do not have a federal license to engrave on firearms, yet, will gladly take your money and engrave your firearm without telling you that it is an illegal transaction. This means if you use their services, your firearm may be confiscated as evidence if the ATF prosecutes them for operating without a federal license. Not to mention, in the event of any errors, damage, theft, fire, etc, the business insurance will not cover damages involving illegal engraving."

This is the only place I've ever seen this. Is there anything to it, or just marketing hype?

Kind of a chicken little response but I think they are right according to recent ATF rulings on when you need an FFL to do work on guns. I use Veritas and I know they have a FFL but the ATF has been as clear as the ATFis capable of being on whether you need an FFL to do ANY gun work..

I prefer the look of a diamond tip photograph unless there is a anodized or very hard Parker finish. I always stand next to the guy at the trophy shop as he is doing it. It sounds like they are trying to drum up business.

I prefer the look of not being able to see it at all. Bottom lip of the mag well and blackened fits the letter of the law as does in the trigger well area. I have to point out to people where the engraving is.
