I've been so busy the past several months that I haven't been able to get out to the range at all. It's been terrible. I've had the Bushy for about 7 months, and it's been a safe queen that whole time. Although, technically, all of my guns except my carry piece have been. I digress.

Friday 18 June, I took the Bushy to the NRA Headquarters range to try it out and to dial in the Eotech 512 holosight that sits on the top rail (courtesy of my wife :D ).

The rifle feels marvelous; it's a joy to shoot. It has a bit more felt recoil than an AR, but not much. It's about as loud as a 20-inch-barreled AR, too (which is to be expected).

I had a few failures-to-feed, which seemed to be magazine-related. The factory-neutered 10-that-looks-like-20-round magazine fed fine, and my other 20-round preban mags also fed fine. The problem seemed to be with 30-round mags. For some reason, the bolt seemed to have trouble stripping a round from the mag and chambering it. It only happened when the mag had an even number of rounds in (as in, only when the top round was on the right). The bullet tip would get wedged forward between the breech lugs, instead of entering the chamber. Odd-numbered rounds fed fine. The rounds that did fail were damaged in the process. The brass was gouged and dented, and the bullets themselves were scratched up.

Additionally, some of the mags didn't like to seat and lock into place. I have to give some of them a fairly frank thump to get them to lock.

All of the mags that were having trouble in the Bushy seem to work fine in my RRA AR, so maybe the Bushy is just a bit more finicky about the mags it wants to eat from. :(

The aluminum front handguard got noticeably warm (but not uncomfortably so) after an hour of shooting, and a few hundred rounds.

Once I got the Eotech dialed in, I was very impressed. I was able to get 1-or-2 inch groups at 50 yards, sitting, which is better than I usually shoot[0]. The reticle on the Eotech just seems to settle effortlessly at my desired POA; I usually feel like I'm having to fight to keep my sight picture aligned.

The only real thing I didn't like about the combo is that the Eotech sits pretty high, and the rail on the Bushy is pretty high. Together, they make it so that the reticle is about 6 inches above the barrel, which means that the bullet has quite a lot of rise between the muzzle and my 50-yard zero. I'll need to take it to an outdoor range and zero it to 100 yards instead.

Overall, I'm very happy with my new toy. And with my lady-wife, for gifting me with the Eotech to put atop it.

[0] Which is depressing in and of itself, but isn't the gun's fault.

Cool!

I think you need to trick it out now...
