I had the opportunity to take the M57 to the range to see what kind of accuracy this old pistol is capable of. I was concerned the frosted barrel was going to impart its nastiness on accuracy, but it appears I was mistaken.

I had a limit of 25 yards at the indoor range, though that's all well and good as I'm not the best shot with a pistol at indoor ranges for some reason.
I had forgotten just how loud the 7.62x25 is, about as nasty as a .357 mag from a 4" barrel; not unbearable, but quite stout.
I also found the recoil to be quite a bit more mild from the Tokarev design than my CZ52, perhaps due to the better (for me) ergonomics.

I used both Romanian and Yugoslavian military surplus which worked wonderfully (despite multiple split cases with the Romanian fodder). There was not a single malfunction in the 200+ rounds fired. The Romanian ammunition seemed to have a bit more punch whereas the Yugoslavian ammunition appeared to be a bit more consistent (slightly better accuracy). I'll have to chronograph both these loads when I get a chance.

Though the tiny sights were difficult to pick up during rapid fire, they really seemed to help for slow aimed fire at targets further out. Due to this and absolutely lovely trigger, groups of 3" were doable at 25 yards (again indoors, something I'm usually not all that great at). This pistol is quite a bit more accurate for me than my CZ52 with the same ammunition.
Unfortunately, one of the magazines monkeyed up and refused to eject, requiring a good tug to remove it from the magazine well. I believe it was due to a mag follower that was a little torqued. I believe it's repairable, but I didn't use it after this malfunction. Thankfully, this pistol came with 2 magazines.

Here are a couple pictures of one of the better groups I achieved with the M57 using 80's military surplus fodder.

Now here's another surprise that I found rather pleasant: just about all the crap in the barrel that wouldn't come out with a bronze brush and BreakFree came out with 200 rounds of ammunition. The barrel is still a bit frosted, but far less than it was when I first cleaned the barrel... interesting to say the least.

Shoots a lot better than one might assume, and with all that cool factor too! Congrats on owning such an interesting weapon.;)

I just purchased a second M57 with and additional 1400 rounds of Yugoslavian milsurp FMJ. I guess I really do like this pistol. :D

Seriously, $189 for a solid pistol and $133 for 1400 rounds of reliable and fairly consistent/accurate ammunition (brass case, copper jacket and lead core with no steel anywhere, albeit BE/C) is a pretty decent deal.

Say does the safey on the left side work like a 1911? And it's a decent to, right? I think I held one of these guns this week. Dealer wanted $279. Heck I might just get my C&R for that kind of prices ($189 is alot better than $279!)

It works identical to a 1911; up to safe, down to fire. It crisply engages into each position, inspiring confidence if I were ever to carry it (which I just might in winter months for giggles).

A C&R license is a great thing to have, but it'll put you in the poor-house in short order if you're not careful. :D

Very nice. I'm in the process of rebarreling my Romanian Tokarev. The barrel is in decent shape, and it's a good shooter, but it could be better. It's dark with a few minor pits, but strong, crisp rifling. I want to see what it can really do with a brand new chromed barrel. The problem I'm having is removing the link pin. However, I verified that a 1911 link pin can be used to replace it so I'm just going to have my gunsmith drill it out so I can reuse the link. The pin from my father's Colt Combat Commander slides right in and is the exact same length, so I ordered another one from Wilson Combat, along with a new barrel bushing for the old Combat Commander.

WardenWolf, I would be very interested to hear how that works out for you. At one point after receiving my Yugo M57, I thought I was going to have to do just that.

If I could change one thing on the M57, it would be for a chrome-lined barrel. My M57 is indeed a bit frosted, though not as bad as I was anticipating.
When ordering the 2nd M57 yesterday, I actually opted for the $10 handpick fee, something I never do, in hopes that this one will have a mirror bore that shines (as I've heard of others having).
However, if it's identical to the one I have now, I won't complain since I'm so impressed with that first one that I bought another.
Good luck with your project.

I know another person on this forum that did it, with incredible results; he also put the compensator on it, as I did. However, he didn't quite go the route of just drilling out the pin. He had a gunsmith heat up the barrel and hammer at it until it came out, ruining the old barrel in the process. However, since I know already that a 1911 pin will work, I don't care about saving the pin. I'll just have the pin drilled out, save the link and the barrel and just drop a $2 1911 pin into it and maybe put drop of Loctite on it to tighten it up.

Shoot 30 rounds from a rest yesterday, about a 6" group on a 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper, but only 20 exactly on it. It shoot to the right, must move the sight. The first 18 with the safety in, the last 12 with the safety removed, shoots better with the safety removed, better trigger, about 10#s

Got the new chromed barrel installed. I took the old barrel to the local gun club that I'm a member of, and their gunsmith knocked the old pin out while I waited. I then borrowed the pin from my dad's 1911 and put it back together. He'll get his original pin back once the one I ordered from Wilson Combat comes in. I brought it home, put the gun back together, and chambered a round. Smooth as silk.

Just an update, I just received the 2nd M57. On this one, I opted for the $10 handpick and this time I received an M57 with a much better finish and best of all, a mirror bright bore that's perfect.
The safety has a bit more play in it and the trigger pull is slightly heavier (don't know how that's even possible). However, overall it's great.

Need help fans.

Great range report. I am new to this forum, but have been a gun owner for hmmm, 50 years. I have a question. I have 2 Yugoslavian Tokarevs. Will any of the Polish, Roms, T-33 barrels interchange with mine? Also, Will the firing pin and springs interchange. I have search the sites for a week, called all of the suppliers, and no one seems to know. I just realised I changed the thread. Sorry. Thanks all for your help.
