Range Tool/Parts Kit

I have been thinking I need to carry a few things in my range bag. Perhaps some small parts for the AR and Glock.

Small tools, cleaning implements etc...

What is in your basic kit?

1 Can of Gunscrubber, 1 can of RemOil, and 1 can of compressed air. This is my emergency cleaning kit. Incase someone Im with needs it, I had a friend that once told me that he only cleans his gun once a year "Because its a GLOCK" and he had a big o smile when he said it too, like he was king of the world or something. edit: We went to the range and he opened it so he could show off how dirty it was, ofcourse it jammed a couple times too.

2 Sets of hearing protection and 2sets of eye protection. 600 rounds 9mm and 600 rounds .22lr.

My CZ75 BD and My neos.

Thats all I need, any real problems Id rather solve at home.

It deepends in part on the gun. If I'm shooting a High Standard, for example, I'll probably bring along a rubber mallet to loosen the barrel lock. If I'm shooting a .44 magnum, I'll make sure I've got extra ear plugs. If I'm taking along my pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 41, I'll probably have a bore snake in the range box, since the chamber is somewhat tight.

I've always got extra gun oil, cleaning solvent, aspirin, and eye drops in the range box, as well as tools for adjusting sights, lots of extra ammunition, and a bottle of water.

can of rem oil, q-tips, and cleaning kit with the standard rods and doodads one would expect to see in a kit and a toothbrush.

Aside from that my ear protection ammo and printed out targets. Small cloth to wipe things with and a small alan wrench for my scope mounts incase I want to take the scope off and use the irons. I get frequent headaches so asprin is always on hand anyway but since most people don't a bottle of that would be a good idea, I reccomend the type that are fast acting since who wants to wait around for pills to kick in. A good thing to have is a set of ear plugs to go with the muffs incase someone pulls out the hand cannons esspecialy if you use an indoor range. Water is always good to have on hand as is a few small pieces of hard candy. Nother good thing to have on hand is a bottle of dust off, you can get this from most computer stores and it is basicly a bottle of compressed air.

In my range bag I have a small 8" tackle box containing several allen wrenches, a torx wrench with various bits, a center punch, assorted springs and small gun parts, a velcro cable tie to help with 1911 disassembly, a small tube of blue Loctite and cotton patches. I have a bottle of CLP outside the tacklebox.

I also have the standard hearing protection, rolls of tape, pens, spotting scope and some small targets, in addition to the gun and magazine pockets.

I found a cheap red plastic toolbox for under $5.00 at some Mega Mart of some sort. I found it held my all cleaning kits, rags/q-tips, 4 in 1 screwdriver, pliers, pen/pencil and a old leatherman tool. Extra ear plugs and masking tape for targets go in the red box as well as a pistol cleaning carpet square. I've had to help numerous people over the years with everything from giving them a few drops of oil for a neglected action to tightening scope mount screws. Whenever I go out shooting, the box goes as well.

I have a small driver that I can use to adjust sights, a reporter's pad to keep track of my shooting, magazine loaders (I just got an "Ultimate cliploader" and it is nice), and a roll of tape for targets.

I also keep a bag of foam plugs in case mine need to be replaced or to give away. Last weekend two girls whose BFs had brought them to the indoor range (Wade's in Bellevue, WA) were clearly shooting for the first time. A few small tips and a couple of pairs of plugs to go under their rental shop earmuffs and they seemed to start having fun.

My match bag contains a toolkit along these lines -

General Tools:
A screwdriver with a handful of interchangable bits.
Two folding hex key sets, one English, one Metric.
X-Acto knife.
A 6" smooth-cut #2 pillar file.
Sandpaper.
A couple of cheap punches.
Bottle of Eezox or similar CLP.
Bottle of blue Loctite.
Ten feet of 100mph tape wound around an old magic marker.
Segmented steel cleaning rod, patches, and an old toothbrush.

Parts for the AR:
A spare bolt assembly.
A bolt rebuild kit, including an extra firing pin.
A spare full-length gas tube.
AR-15 front sight adjustment tool.
Extra batteries for the optics/light.

Parts for the Glock:
Extra grip tape.
Extra recoil springs.

All this stuff fits in a standard 9x12x2" Plano box, which lives in the bottom of my shooting bag.


Parts for me:
Water.
Something to snack on, if I remember.
Foam earplugs.
Sunblock.
Eyedrops.
Asprin.
First aid kit, including a pair of trauma dressings.

couple sandbags for rests, cloth for wiping and drinks really sums it up. the range is 2.5 miles from my house, anything else and i'll just run home for it
