Ray Kelly talks about guns on the Daily Show

If guns cause violence, how come the places they're supposedly being trafficked from aren't as violent as these "gun free" cities?

Also wants Chicago level gun control to be enacted nationwide to stem the flow of illegal guns into NY.
Well I suppose after that well have to impose a control measure on Mexico to prevent overflow into the US. What's that? You say they already have one?Well what about the....?, Or how about the.......? Maybe I should just keep repeating it and certainly at some point it will make sense.

He lied

If he stated that 2% of crimes were done with ANY rifle let alone a semi auto sporting one = he is lying.

According to the FBI UCR [ and who knows where they get their numbers ] the deaths/shooting by rifle last year were 5.

That is no where near 2% of the deaths/shooting in NYS let alone NYC.

And do note that the FBI UCR is most likely including the use by LEO's and legal citizens when they list "deaths" from firearms in their yearly study.

btw,if we go the Chicago route,he will INCREASE the number of murders by gun.

Admits that assault weapons are only used in 2% of crimes in New York, but wants them banned anyways.

Also wants Chicago level gun control to be enacted nationwide to stem the flow of illegal guns into NY. What's next, a federal ban on marijuana to keep pot out of the inner cities?
A similar thing happened in the UK. They put pressure on france to outlaw- get this- starter pistols and black powder revolvers because they were concerned that people would smuggle them into the UK via the channel tunnel.

The UCR numbers that I've seen for last year were that rifles accounted for around 320 deaths.

Where are you coming up with five?

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk. Hence all the misspellings and goofy word choices.

I think there is a lot of confusion about parameters here. The first statistic mentioned was 2% of crimes in New York (I assume NYC) was committed with semi-automatic rifles, then the lines became blurred in the folloing comments.

This is a chief reason why statistics are mostly worthless in an educated discussion unless they are carefully defined and people are willing to leave their biases out of the analysis of said statistics. Similar the figures the left bandied about concerning "children's" deaths caused by firearms during the Clinton administration only to find that the term "children" included 18 year old gang bangers. :banghead:

He said under 2%, so technically he didn't lie. Technically. He still spouted off a lot of stupidity. The phrase "just the first step" (or its equivalent) was also used by him or Stewart. Stewart also mentioned banning hollow points (screw public safety, I guess...), and generally showed his true colors on the issue. So much for "you can't control crazy." (Unless the rest of that thought was, "... so you have to control the guns.")

He states that universal background checks would stop straw purchases:confused:

Aren't straw purchases done because of background checks? Gee I wish I was a famous police commissioner with a six figure salary so I could understand this stuff...

I just don't understand why we can't pass some laws outlawing assault and murders, and get at the base issue . . . :banghead:

Agreed. 2% of crimes in NYC does not equal 2% of murders in the US. I wasn't impressed with his interview, but let's not build strawmen to argue against his agenda or statements. There was enough not to like there without having to misunderstand or misinterpret his statements.

They get them from just about every local and state law enforcement agency in the US (I think participation is a requirement for some or all categories of federal grants and other moneys for law enforcement) My department has probably about ten full time employees whose sole job is to translate police report information into UCR data and do quality assurance on that translation. The department gets periodically audited to ensure accuracy of information reported.

Look, it's very simple.

When the straw purchaser transfers his firearm to a criminal, the universal background check system will flag this purchase and allow the cops to arrest both of them.

See? Easy.

there is a FLAW in your logic....

something about the whole reason FOR a straw purchaser

(BTW, for your lurkers - straw purchase, or purchasing a gun on behalf of someone else is a federal felony, punishable by a fine of $100,000 and 10 YEARS in jail, and done because of the back ground check, so there will be no check when sold/given to the criminal - usually by family or girlfriends)

In other words, SOLO is being VERY SARCASTIC

He get's paid by the NYC political machine, probably wants higher office or at least more publicity for future positions, books, speaking, his own security firm, etc. What do you think he's going to say>

It's all about personal advancement for these guys.
