Yes, I was refering to the Automatic Bench Priming Tool.

I've got one also, had it for probably 20+ years. Works like a charm.

It's quick, but you can still feel the primer seating.

Love mine, all I ever use. Although cannot figure out what happened, even after getting RCBS involved, had to tape a washer to the back side near the rocker to time it right. Still works like a charm

I have the RCBS bench priming tool that uses the APS strips. It works great except the plastic sleeve that reduces the primer hole in the shell holder is a short lived item. I modified the shell holders so that they were made to fit the particular size primer that I was using for that particular cartridge.

The photo shows the modification that I made sleeving the primer hole with bronze filler rod and then drilling it to size.

Have used the RCBS Bench priming tool for years. Has the perfect leverage for feeling the primer seat, I use the tubes when priming large volumes of cases and place the primer by hand into the punch when doing small batches. Only issue I've ever had was a out of spec shellholder that was too tight for the punch to slide through. I bought extra shellholders so I can have one in the press and another in the priming tool.

I use the bench priming tool also. It works great and I've never had an shellholder trouble either.

Hi...
That is an interesting modification. I am curious...how did you secure the brass rod it is it a press fit?
I have periodically had RCBS send me additional large and small primer sleeves as they do tend to eventually fail.

It's all I've used for many years... how many? Not sure. But I paid $55 for it new, retail. :)
I had one problem with it: occasionally, usually on the very last primer in the tube, it would flip that one on out onto the floor. The fix? Snug down the adapter (that screws into the plunger) with a drill bit through the little hole, and loctite it.

Thanks, for all your replys. The reason I am asking is, I have been haveing trouble seating primers. they do not want to go all the way down, kind of like they my be to long. This has been happing in differnt makes of brass. I have been useing my press to seat them. I have a RCBS JR. that i have had for ever. I called RCBS about this, and was told that press does not have enough pressuer to seat primers proerly. He recommioned I go to the Automatic Bench Priming Tool. I have a Lee hand primer, I do not use it any more because the strength in my hands is not what it once was. And yes, I have tryed useing the primer pocket tools, nothing seems to help.

You can also try a ram primer. They are inexpensive and give good feel for seating. The only disadvantage is that you must place the primers by hand. The Lee version is around ten bucks or so. RCBS makes one as well.

Have used it exclusively for 3 years. I do not like the slop in the handle, although I sent photos to RCBS and they say it is normal. I also have a lot of trouble with the ram not striking the hole and primer dead on which causes primers to get stuck sidways and I have to disassemble the unit to get the primer out. Guess I am saying that I am looking for some other method.....and it could be all me.

I got one for Christmas this year. I've not been loading much off of my Dillon recently, and have only used it for one batch of ammo. My initial impression is that it isn't any better than my RCBS hand primer. Actually there is an extra step, filling up the primer tube. Time will tell...

I got some brass rod that just fits the primer hole in the shell holder. I then tig brazed it in place from the rear of the shell holder. I drilled the hole for the primer and recut the countersink the rear of shell holder.

I have a lathe for the turning operation but it could be done on a drill press setting up a vice ahead of time that would locate the shell holder in the proper location for drilling.

I used JB Weld to make my prototype. It has held up well past 500-600 primers but I feel it would eventually wear out faster than the brass. If you do not have access to welding equipment, it is a good alternative.

cfullgraf's pictures still appear on my computer.....did he fix it already?

I also use the APS version of the bench primer. I like it better than the tube fed one because the handle is spring loaded and stays up by itself. Of course I have the APS strip loader too, and even improved on that tool to make it work way better. I posted a how-to on that somewhere on THR.

I think the only achilles heel for the APS version is the plastic inserts that cfullgraf fixed. I made a brass one for the large primers from a .22 case....just ground off the base cut it down a little shorter and flared one end with a copper tube flaring tool. Seems to work. Been meaning to see if soldering the hole closed of another and drilling it out would work for the small primer size.....but for someone with the skill set and tools cfullgraf has, his method would probaby be easier.

I'm assuming he dedicates a shell holder to be permanently modded.....right or wrong?

If I had my druthers, I'd rather have a longer lasting insert for regular shellholders. Would be nice if RCBS would start making them out of brass, alum., or steel, even tin.

Right, I have dedicated shell holders modified for the priming tool. I think I have one or two pairs of the same shell holders where one is set up for small primers and the other set up for large primers. But, mostly, one shell holder, one primer size.

Even the premium shell holders, RCBS or Redding, are not that expensive to have dedicated shell holders.

Strange -- still comes through as broken link in both Chrome and IE.
