In the process of reassembling the trigger group of my M1 after replacing the trigger guard, I broke the hammer spring housing.
I was holding the spring & housing compressed between my thumb and index finger while at the same time trying to position it and the trigger so I could insert the trigger pin. This is rather difficult to do, and I must have twisted the housing & spring, or something, and the very thin housing just snaped off close to the yoke.
Afterwards (!), I looked at instructions provided at the CMP website, and it turns out that what I was doing was right as far as procedure. I also learned that there is a fixture that may be used if many rifles are to be reassembled, as may be the case for an armorer. But for just an occasional reassembly, the manual process should be OK.
Does any one know if there is a trick to compress the spring and line everything up so the pin can be inserted? (I will be buying a new spring housing at a gun show tomorrow, and don't want to break it.)
Thanks -
