Howdy fellas

here is the skinny I am looking at having McGowen spin me up a rifle barrel for a Rem 700 long action and on their build your barrel page it states

Recoil Lug Size*
Please specify the Recoil Lug size you are or will be using (LUG NOT INCLUDED). This is not for a recoil lug we are providing, we are requesting this information for the sole purpose of the threaded shank length. Recoil lugs are sold separately

And I have a few options I was planning on using the factory lug

is this a bad idea?
What would I gain over a different lug?
I’m guessing the size difference is the thickness of the lug?

what would you do if you were me?

this will be a hunting rifle 26 inch barrel
6.5-06

I always install a new lug when replacing barrels. I don't have any real preference for thickness, so ill usually got with a .250 or what's on sale. Just gotta let the barrel maker know how thick a lug you are using.

I would ask the barrel maker to supply the lug if possible. The new lug will likely be thicker and machined flat on both sides. This will give you a better barrel to action alignment and it should only cost $25-30.
