Ok, I like to dry practice, and I do a fair amount. But when I go to the range, I like to do controlled pairs. When I dry practice (I shoot autos, mostly), I have to reset the action (rack slide, thumb hammer, or re-squeeze squeeze-cocker, depending on gun) before I can shoot the second of the pair.

So, I wonder if there is an invention, or if someone would please invent for me, a recoil simulator/slide activator. Pneumatic? Electric? Something that cycles the slide so I can dry-practice controlled pairs in the comfort of my home.

Any ideas?

thanks

Not an overall answer, but some shooters used to drill a hole in the hammer spur of a M1911/A1 and run a string through it. The gun was held in the strong hand and "fired" after which the weak hand pulled the string to re-cock the hammer. The string could also be tied around the hammer spur or run through an existing "hollow" hammer.

The "simulator" idea sounds darn good, though.

Superficially the idea is immensely appealing ... sorta - ''I wish''!!

However .. once I start to consider the dynamics ... I realize that any device to simulate has in fact gotta deal with x, y and z axes .. concurrently. Muzzle lift ... rearward displacement ... and torque.

I daresay it would be possible to design .. sure of that but .. complexity would I think perforce render it uneconomic.

Well, offhand I've got a bit of a half-baked idea. It would probably work better with revolvers because I can't come up with an idea for the slide, BUT:

Attach a set of electrical wires to certain muscles in your wrist area, and wire a small battery to a switch inside the trigger mechanism so that every time the gun is "fired", an electrical jolt is delivered to your wrist. The shock-induced contractions could probably be tweaked to simulate the loss of sight alignment caused by recoil. :D

It's my understanding that FATS (that's FireArms Training Systems), inc.'s setup has an internal setup that uses air pressure to simulate recoil. Unfortunately the conversion from real gun to FATS training weapon is both expensive and permanent.

At the barracks here, they train with the WETS setup, which I can only assume is the same as the FATS Justin mentioned. Having fired the Steyr Aug both on a live range and in the WETS I can say that the recoil is nearly identical.

Although a simulated weapons training facility is obviously out of most people's reach, I think gas would be the most logical way of simulating recoil in a handgun. Perhaps relatively cheap replicas could be made with a cut-down gas system that connects to cannisters or something. That way, you'd have your live weapon for carry and range, and the training weapon for hardening yourself to recoil and home-practice.

Maybe it's a business idea for some THR entrepreneur.
