Recomends on 22 mag

Shoot a lot of trap and plinking pistols, but got an invite for spring ground squirrel shooting. Have a couple of 22 lr but would like a 22 mag. Any and all recommendations welcome. Keep in mind that I live in the republic of Kalifornicator. Any autos besides the new Ruger? If you have a recommend on scopes for that kind of work I'd appreciate that too. Mike

Look at the Marlin 983S. I am going to buy one. Stainless, tube fed, laminate stock. Oh, so sexy. I want one!

If you don't mind a bolt action, I recommend the CZ 452 series of rifles. I have the Varmint style (pictured). While it's not the easiest thing to carry around the woods hunting, it prints nice little groups at 50-75 yards.

The Marlin rifles are also good and less expensive. I think the only two autoloading .22WMR rifles are made by Ruger and Remington. I keep wanting to pick up the Taurus M72 pump carbine, but I always find another use for $200.

Marlin's seem to be the way to go with 22 Mags. They have many different models that can accomodate whatever you like. As far as scopes go
Simmons makes one called the 22 MAG it comes in fixed power 4x32 or adjustable 3-9x32. They also have one that is 3-9x32AO(Adjustable Objective). Cabelas is the only place that I have found that carries this scope. From what I have read about grouund squirrels is that they range can vary quite a bit. The Adjustable Objective would be great for that. Hope this helps.

Savage! I was in the same situation as you. I had the .22 rimfire, wanted a little more reach. I picked up a Savage model 93 .22 MAG. Myself and a lot of others think Savage firearms are WAY UNDER-RATED. I couldn't ask for more from a rim-fire than I do my Savage .22MAG. Great consistancy in groups, field performance, and over-all bullet in the 10 ring. I like this rifle and I think you will find the results very satisfying.

+1 Especially since Savage has added the Accu-trigger to the 93 series rifles.

Personally, the only Savage I own is a "pre Accu-trigger" 93 in .17HMR. It currently is in "trade pending" status with another member of this fine board, as he has a rifle I'd rather have for my purposes. It'll consistently print dime sized groups at ~100 yards with Hornady VMAX.

My only .22MAG is a Remington 597 laminate model (semi-auto), with a Volquartsen sear. It consistently groups into a nickel at ~75 yards with Remington 33gr VMAX ammo, slightly larger groups with Winchester Dynapoint.

I don't know how relevant you'll find this information to your question, but I hope it's helpful.

I third the Savage rifle as a current 'best buy'.
American made too.
The Marlin is a close second, but I think they make a more accurate .17 HMR than .22 Magnum.
The Savage is better in .22 Magnum.
I forgot the Ruger 77/22 mag, especially if you spend the money and have a Shilen barrel installed.
Kinda pricey compared to the other two rifles and I haven't seen where they will shoot any better.

I agree with grimjaw. The CZ-452 Varmint in .22 mag is the best value out there. While the Savage is a good rifle, the CZs are much more accurate.

If the weight of the "Varmint" is too much for you, look at the 452 "American".

I like the Savage as well. I have a 93GL that shoots very well. Unfortunately mine is pre-Accutrigger, so I need to install a Rifle Basix sear to get a decent trigger pull (I have it, just haven't installed it yet).

a used ruger 10/22 mag is still the best game in town... if you can find one...
i just got one (over on rimfirecentral.com ) for $325 in great shape...

Marlin 922M

Anybody have any experience or opinion on the semi auto Marlin 922M .22magnum? It is styled somewhat like the Camp Carbines but is no loonger made, I believe.

If you like bolt action rifles, I have a Marlin 25MN .22 mag that is 100% reliable and quite accurate. It would be great for squirrel hunting.

I have a Remington M597M synthetic in .22WMR and have been very happy with it...

Does California allow such high capacity (9 round detachable mag) dangerous rifles?

id go either marlin bolt action or cz /brno makes a 611 or 611 a in 22 mag, it is a take down semi-auto! (drool here).
also Excel arms makes a cool looking 'scary' looking black rifle 22 mag, dont know how they shoot though, i think there was one for sale on this site, with lots o extra mags.
