I've decided on a red dot sight that has an ACSS reticle and looked at a few reviews of the optic. One of them from InRangeTV suggested it's best use comes when using a magnifier so the elevation dots can be more easily seen.

Looking at magnifiers online I see prices go from $60 up to $200. Since I'm looking at doing a fixed 3x or 5x I don't feel that should cost much. Also, which would others recommend the 3x or 5x? Use will be on a typical AR in .223, nothing special.

I was shooting my plain AR at 3" and 6" targets at 100 yards last week while sighting through a 1.5-4x scope. I sure was wishing for a bit more magnification and a finer reticle.

If a 5x doesn't add too much weight, I'd be tempted to try that instead of a 3x. But if it adds too much weight in total with the ACSS red dot, I'd probably look seriously into an illuminated reticle scope.

It's $20 and 2oz more of weight for the extra 2x in power, I can live with that. I'll have to see what ACSS scopes are available for what price and factor in the weight/cost of the rings or scope base, but I agree with you that putting too much weight into the red dot and magnifier is defeating the purpose compared to a scope.
