So one of our members sold me this old 500 bout a month ago. My FFL buddy an I finally connected and I picked it up last week.
I should have taken before pictures, but there weren't any major scratches, dings, or dents, it was just finish ware.

I bought the stock set off eBay before I even had the gun in hand. Supposedly it's an "experimental" set, tho from who knows where.
The stock took some fitting, and is still proud at the top, rear, of the receiver.

The forend is about 1" longer than the 7 3/4" slide tube. I dunno how closely one of the other like shotguns parts would fit, but my initial thought was that it might be off an 870.
To get it to work I bored it a little more than 1" deeper at the rear, and opened up the sides. It now goes back over the receiver about that much, which means I need to relieve the right side for the ejection port. I also much prefer the long forend look, but moved back to it covers more of the gap in front of the receiver. I still need to paint the forend cap...er...nut?.....whatever.

Both stock and dorend are checkered, and it looks like laser, or machine cut. No borders, and no errors.

I wanted to do something a little different with the receiver, so I wire brushed it, and painted it with "bronze" engine enamel. I did it with rattle can for two reasons; one I didn't know if I'd like the look, and two I don't have bronze duracoat yet, it's on my next order. I also painted the pump arms.
I've decided that I DO like this color scheme, and I'll probably go ahead and redo it in duracoat properly.
Im also going to durablue the barrel and pump tube (which I haven't touched yet in these pictures)

Anyway, still got some tinkering to do, but so far I'm very happy I didn't tacticool this gun like I'd originally intended.....oh it's also go very nice swirl/fish scale engraving on the bolt and lifter....gonna polish that up and durablue the lifter, probably leave the bolt white.

It's still lipstick on a pig! :p (870's Rule!) :neener:
Seriously, Loonwulf, it looks great. The 'fishscale engraving' is called 'engine turning'.
The forend looks like some of the Sears "Ted Williams" pumps, of which some were Mossbergs.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like it's off an auto. Hey it works, and it looks good.

It could well be off an auto, but besides being about 1-1.25" longer than the long slide tube this gun has, it fits perfectly. Nose cap recess is exact even.

I've had a few 870s, and admittedly I generally prefer them. They usually feel better in my hands.
This stock set is a little thiner in the wrist, and the forend feels 870esque, it actually makes the pig feel sleek, and responsive.

The stuff on the bolt isn't traditional jeweling, it's deep. Might not be engraved, considering this is an AB 500, might be stamped. I'll grab a picture....either way it's cool cause I can paint over it without losing it.

if i remember that gun is a 71 or 72, just after they went to the 2 action rods.
I think your right, it also has the spring under the slide tube, and the antirattle rings, which I think came out around then.

Thanks guys appreciate the compliments!

There was the M500 "Regal" which had checkered walnut.
Bought one around '85 new for 215 bucks (deer gun).
Popped an 8 pointer at 77yards w it (smoothbore- 4X scope).

The regal had a red pad IIRC. Had to edit post, shot an 8 pt with it in '87.
So purchase was '85, not '95.

this stock set came with a light brown/redish pad, its actually not attached right now because im going to tear the thing down again to mess with the receiver some more.

are you going to paint/coat the bolt and lifter, they look good polished. i talked with my dad he said the bolt were done on a roll press when they where still hot.

Lipstick on a pig people say? That bugs me. Compared too? Oh an 870. I'd take a Mossberg 500 over an 870 Express any day. But.....id take an 870 Wingmaster over a 500 Field any day.

Either way, that looks awesome LoonWulf! I'm a 500 and 590 fan.

The new Retrograde has me intrigued. Heat shield. Bayonet lug. Awesome addition for Mossberg.

I was thinking it would look cool with the bolt done and the lifter silver, but I'm thinking it will look better with both polished silver.

Neat info on how that was done, I like it!

Only 870s I've owned were old wingmasters, those are a step above your average pumper imo!

Hadn't heard about that version if mossy, I'll have to go check it out.
