Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone has had to repaint a rusty magazine before? I have about a dozen (and climbing because I found a place that sells them cheap) used HK G3 mags that are aluminum but the floor plates on those mags are steel. I can see that some already have some surface rust on the bottom.

I plan to use Evapo-Rust to get rid of the rusting on the bottom of the mag plates but does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent rust from forming on those again after I have cleaned them off?

Are there products out there that any of you have used for this purpose of rust prevention?

As a note I do not have access to a sand blaster so anything that requires that process is out of the question.

And no even though they are cheap I would like to be able to fix up something that is technically not broken instead of chucking the mags that have the surface rust and nothing else that is wrong with them.

Thanks,

AW

If you just wanted them painted, try a wire wheel in a grinder (or stiff wire brush as a last resort). Brush as much rust off as possible (atleast get anything loose off), then paint them with POR15. Tough as nails, and I use this method all the time restoring cars. You can get it in a few different colors, and its the best alternative to powder coating.
