With the seasonal sales I managed to snag a vortex venom reflex sight for 179 bucks, free shipping. I've been contemplating putting a red dot on one of my handguns for hunting. Was debating if I'd rather put the reflex on my gp100 but I decided I'd rather hunt with the 45 colt over the 357.

I want to take my handgun hunting more seriously and maybe the rifle home. And in order to do that next season I need a handgun with an optic. The 45 colt with a 255 gr hardcast going just north of 1000 fps will be more than enough oomph for north Eastern whitetail, especially keeping 50 yards and under. And of course lots of practice.

So now I'm trying to figure out a mount. I want to keep it as low profile as possible. So far I'm leaning towards the raptor mount. Anyone have any experience with the raptor mount? Appears to be no drill and tap, which is what I'd prefer. Any other suggestions?

I have one if the Weigand no drill mounts on my OM .41 mag Blackhawk with a reflex sight. It works just fine. I have one of the Raptor mounts for the gun in a storage drawer. The one screw mounting down through the existing sight hole and possibly hitting the cylinder just did not look as solid to me. Plus I would hate to strip that screw hole. I also have a NM Blackhawk that has been drilled and tapped for a Leupold mount. Between the 3 mounts my preference is for the Weigand for a reflex sight and the drilled and tapped for a scooe.

That’s a good looking mount. I don’t have any experience with it, but would love to try one out. I have used a variety of no drill, no tap mounts from Weigand with success so I am confident in recommending them, however that Raptor Mount looks good.

Happy to see you diving into handgun hunting! That critical first step is leaving your rifle at home!

I've got a Weigand on my Blackhawk 45 and have had it on for over a yr. with many rounds through it, I did use red Loctite on the screw and it's stayed where I put it with many heavy Ruger only rounds through it.

Edit: NVM figured it out.

Got my reflex sight today. Really like it, mocked it up on the blackhawk to see how it feels. Does have a bit of "flare" to it but I believe it's due to astigmatism. Still should be much more precise than irons for me. Have yet to order my mount. The reflex did come with a picitany base if I do choose to use the weigand rail, but still leaning towards the raptor.

Oh man, it looks gooood on that 4⅝bbl.
Nice!

Looks like you could get by with minimal holster mods too.
That's the next adventure. I was hoping to order one that fits a Blackhawk with a reflex. I have a simply rugged holster for it with irons, it's a real nice holster and would be ashame to cut it to fit. I'll have to do some searching. I'm thinking I'd.want a chest rig. It's the easiest to access when sitting or layering. It's also very comfortable. I have a few paradise paradi leather chest holsters may be able to have him make one or modify my existing one.

Maybe buy a cheapie uncle Mike's to experiment on.

Hey @MidRoad , if you haven't ordered a mount yet PM me and I'll give you my Raptor mount. Says a Vortex will fit it.

I just tried it with a Fastfire III on my SBH, with some 300gr loads. I probably should have let the locktite dry, but I didn't and it came loose pretty quick. That put me off, and sent me wishing for the simplicity of the Bowen rear I just reinstalled.

But hey, if you wanna try it, it won't cost you a dime.

Holy crap if he doesn’t want it I’ll sure take you up on that offer.

I used open sights on my SRH 44mag but going back to my BFR 30/30, that has a scope. I just wasn't comfortable in my shooting, while deer hunting. Got a 6 pointer, and my wife got an 11 pointer, both on opening morning, so the freezers are full, but where I sat this year, sight was pretty wide open. I might try a red dot next, as your setup looks pretty good.

Yea man ,I'm really looking forward to the red dot. Mount is on its way, HUGE thanks to @WrongHanded .

I like shooting with iron sights, and like the simplicity and the ruggedness of them. I'm comfortable out to 25 yards shooting free hand with irons right now, and will hopefully be extending further with this coming spring/summer.

However I feel the need to be as accurate as possible when it comes to hunting, to deliver quick clean and ethical shots for fast put downs. I think the reflex on this particular blackhawk will be a fantastic tool with practice I'm going to set a self limit of 50 yards(supported) for next season if all goes well . Hopefully in a few years when I improve my ability to shoot big bores at longer range and save up enough for a BFR in 454 or 460 with a scope I'll push my comfort level to 100 yards or so, time will tell.Untill then I hope to fill the freezer a few times over with that 45 colt.
