Relic 1911

A gun made in 1914, recovered in a lake in 1961 ain't going to solve any crimes committed 50-60 years ago before forensics were as advanced as they are today. Been watching CSI too much :)

Looks like a tragic boating accident to me.

That is what I was thinking.....it was recovered in 1961..

Same here.

I would not even mention it to the cops.

It was old & underwater for years before it was found.

There is no possible chance they would be able to match it to a crime that happened that long ago. They didn't collect shell casings and keep them 60 years back then.
Even if stolen, they didn't keep computer records that long ago, and nobody is going to dig through half a gazillion police reports from 1915 to 1960, even if they still have them in a warehouse somewhere.

Turn it over to the cops?
There is a possible chance it will rust away further in an evidence box for years, or disappear entirely while in custody.

It could have been...

You guys forget one possibility.......it could have been dumped in the lake by a law enforcement agency attempting to dispose of it and other guns.

It could have been dumped in the lake by Dianne Feinstein, too !! :D

Ahh... difi has a concealed carry license, she just wants you to get rid of your gun.

Nice 'catch'! Let us know how it shoots.

I managed to shoot it this weekend. Nothing real exciting and I only put one magazine through it. It seems to shoot like any other military .45 I have ever shot..........you know, 4-5" groups at 25 yards. Still I am stoked that it still functions as it was designed to and has decent combat accuracy.

Tragic boating accidents actually do happen. I would not assume it was was used in a crime before found 1961 (and from the appearance it was in the water way before 1961) or that it could produce usable forensic ballistics (which involves microscopic striations).

Now, a new gun found in the grass by the side of the road, that's likely a don't touch, call the cops, situation without question.

A rusted gun pulled from a lake in 1961, less likely.

Could have been stolen years ago...police can lift the serial number using some sort of CSI gee whiz technique, even if it's been filed off. "Found" guns, are problematic from a legal standpoint...be advised. Rod

The serial number is quite visible, and it has been run through the California DROS system. It came up clean.

I wonder if there were any Army Air Corps or Army Air Force plane crashes in the area. if the pilot was carrying it in his survival kit it may have been left behind when they rescued the pilot.
