Reload Data for 460 S&W

I just picked up a 460 S&W. Would like to use the same 300 grain cast WFN bullet with gas check that I use in my 454 Casull. And H110 works great, so am looking for recipe with that in the 460. Any help out there.
Aso, what kind of velocities are you guys getting with this pistol?

I think you are going to be disappointed in H110 in the S&W .460, especially with lead bullets. I don't have specific data for you. I found that H110 didn't like to ignite in .460 and switched to Lil' Gun.

At first glance it looks like 300 grain is going to be too light in a lead bullet.

Thanks for the quick reply. You say H110 does not work well in the 460. I just figured it would be a good choice for a magnum round. And about the cast bullet. What bullet and load would you recommend? I am open for suggestions. I have not shot or reloaded for this one yet. Always up for the challenge and adventure.

I have settled on Lil'Gun myself, but have shot quite a bit of h110& 296. If you are reloading Hornady brass you must ream the primer pocket to fit a WLRM primer, as they will stick out beyond the end of the casing, should be recessed about .001-.002" below case end. With the WLRM primer you shouldn't have any more trouble. I've also found that H110&296 chrony at the same speeds. The load I've settled on is 240gr hornady xtp/mag, WLRM primer, 42gr Lil'gun, chrony's at 1820fps.

Mike.......I have loaded several hundred rounds of Hornady brass with WLRM primers and have never had a problem setting them to the proper depth without reaming. I prime separately by hand, and they seem to set with the same amount of force as the standard WLR primers. I've mic'ed both and they appear to be the same size. I know when the .460 first came out, some cases were made for Large Pistol primers, but I believe that since, all manufacturers have made the switch. Could it be that you were loading older brass or am I doing something wrong?

It may be that my brass is older brass. When I hand pressed the primes they stuck out past the end of the case enough that I shot them one at a time. I've had this brass for about 2.5 yrs. When the 460 and the 500 both first came out the brass was for large pistol primers, now, I believe that they are large rifle primer pockets. So if you do get a hold of some old brass keep your eyes open and check every one.

I've always had good luck with H110 in the .460. Hornady recommends it along with Win296(exact same powder) and Lil' Gun under both their 240 and 300 grain XTP-Mags. I have no experience with it under cast bullets, but I know it likes a good firm crimp which may be where the problem lies with cast boolits. I prefer it under the 240 grainers whereas I prefer Lil' Gun under the 300s. I've also found that Hodgdon's Starting loads for the 300 grn XTP to be above the max load in the Hornady manual and way too hot for my PC Compensated Hunter.

It's been a while since I've loaded for the .460. It was my wife's gun as a birthday present and now we are separated and she has it

I loaded with cast performace bullets, I think up in the range of 375 to 400 grains.

Also, to save money, I loaded with Hornady's, I think they are 250 grain HP/XTP's (there are not the magnum bullets). I called Hornady about it and they told me on the phone they did not publish .460 data for the HP/XTP (non-mag) bullet because the bullet tended to fragment on impact, but that it was no problem to use the bullet in the gun for target shooting/plinking. Hornady said just to extrapolate the data and load between the 300 grain and 240 grain HP/XTP-MAG data. I settled on 48 grains of Lil' Gun which is a hot load for the 250 grain HP/XTP.

With H110 you will want to stay near the top ends of the loading data. At or near the minimum loads I was experiencing powder blowback and it was quite an unpleasant experience.

+1 for the rifle primers seated in a pistol primer pocket, sticking up a little.
It's not the best situation in a heavy recoiling weapon.

NavyLT- 460s&w is alot of gun for a woman, but it sounds like she can handle it, if she kept it.
It's one gun that would settle any aurgement with a single shot. I wouldn't like to find myself standing at the "pointy end" of it. And an upset ex. controlling the trigger.

She used to shoot all five cylinders in succession at an indoor range in Oklahoma City, and then reload and shoot sometimes 2 or 3 more. It would usually stop the whole place. There would be scorch marks on the barriers between lanes. One time the muzzle blast knocked the target drive motor loose and it fell on her head.

Damn I am going to miss that gun.

I think in this cal. (460 S&W) the 340 grain WFGC cast bullet that I cast will be about the perfect weight for a cast slug one would shoot, I also think that heat treated wheel weight alloy will perform perfectly out of my custom 16" mgm barrel w/Reeder brake, and work better than jacket's for BIG GAME!! I think I am going to go with either AA5744 or AA1680, I want to get around 1900 FPS, I am wanting to know if anyone has ever tried AA1680 powder, I know as far as velocity 1900 to 2000 is doable with a closed breech and 16" tube it should be no problemo!! Any hands on for the 1680 would be apreciated!! I know 296, 2400, AA#9, and lil'gun will work, but I have about 4lbs. of 1680 and this would be my hunting load so it would last forever and is about in the perfect heat range for my wants!! This will be my first season with the encore 460, and would be great to go with my 454 SRH that I would reserve for very thick brush use or the last 2 or 3 day's of the gun season as we do a few drives, when they begin to hold tight! or hog hunt's, or any where under 100 yard shots are needed, or have a possible need for more than ONE SHOT! the rest of our Ohio deer season,and any other deer, elk, moose, and bear hunting the encore with this cast slug or the 300 grn. SST, will be my CHOICE WEAPON!! It will take any of the mentioned game out to as far as 250 yards, which is as far as I feel confident, and have enough penetration to drop them! So please let me know if anyone can give some info on the AA1680!! THANK'S and GOOD SHOOT'N

I have not had any problems with H110 and 250 grain HP/XTPs in my 460. I can't remember what load I used but it works perfectly. Had fun today shooting a car door with the 460 and my Desert Eagle.

I will try to look up the load data that I was using.

I have used H110 for everything including 357 mag, 44mag, 454 casul, 460, and 50AE. Never had a misfire with all of those calibers.

I re-load about 10 rounds of 460 S&W by mistake , using Large pistol magnum primer and H110 powder . Have any one ever loaded 460 with Large pistol magnum primer before ? book said Large rifle primer . Should I take all the bullets out and redo with the correct primers ?

1. H110/Win. 296 should work about as well as any other magnum powder.

2. The first cases for the 460 S&W took large pistol primers. Ones of more recent manufacture use large rifle primers. All Starline cases have used large rifle primers.

3. I would never use Lil' Gun in anything. The flame temperature is such that it can burn out the forceing cone/throat of a barrel in relatively short time. If you guys like it, go for it. I'll never use it.

4. You can use large rifle primers in cases that are made for large pistol primers and vice versa. I know; I've actually done it rather than just theorize about it. If you are loading the 460 to it's full potential, I would only use large rifle or large rifle magnum primers since the SAMI max for this cartridge is a whopping 65,000 psi.

5. For my 460 S&W Encore, Alliant 2400 is the best powder I've found. For my 460 S&W revolver, I've found no clear winners yet after having tried H110/Win. 296, Accurate 1680, Blue Dot, an H4198/Blue Dot duplex load, Blue Dot, Accurate #9 and probably others I've forgotten. For the time being, I've selected Accurate #9 which gives excellent accuracy at up to 25 yards and usable big game accuracy to 50 yards with iron sights. The scoped Encore is much better accuracy wise than the revolver being good for sub 2 inch 3 shot groups past 200 yards.
