I have been thinking about buying a Remington mod #700 sps varmint bolt 223 heavy barrel, off the rack. If you own one have you found it to be very accurate. and if so what loads? Don't know that i really need one but uknow how that goes. All thoughts appreciated.

My Remington Heavy Barrel Varminter in .223 was purchased new in 1979. I don't think they make the model I have anymore, but mine has proven to be very, very accurate. The only thing I ever did to it was add a Leupold 3x10 Vari-X II scope and a Harris Bi-Pod. I have a target that I've saved over the years that has 5 rounds in 5/8" at 200 yards from this rifle.

Rem .223 case, CCI primer, 40g Hornady Moly V-max, 27g of H335. Full length resize with an RCBS X-Die on my Pro2000. Always less than an 1" if I do my part and I can crank them out of the press pretty fast too.
I have no problem popping critters out to as far as I can see them with my 3x9 Sightron SII.

I'm not much of a small-game varminter, so I've always liked the heavier bullets.
As a result, I have been avoiding the Remington 700s in 223 because of their 1:12" twist. My 'normal' 223 load (that I share between my bolt guns and ARs) uses a 75gr Hornady OTM over 24.5gr of Varget and my lightest 223 plinkin' load uses a 55gr bullet over 27gr of TAC. I've never been overly fond of the 40gr-50gr bullets just out of general principle.
Now that you can get the VTW in a faster twist, that'd be the one I'd look at most.

rbernie, I am with ya on that... I like a 63 gr 69 gr. for my mini, it is 1 : 7 twist. great little camp gun.. when I hang out in bear county mostly Blacks and there are a lot of'em i what at least a 69 gr to bust them in the head...if they get ugly... but really just a bit of noise and there gone...
Not sure if they are available at the moment but you might check into the 700 SPS Tactical which has the 1 in 9" twist. It is equipped with a 20" barrel but I have owned three 700s in .223 (700VLS , 700LTR and 700SPS) and my 20" 1 in 9" 700LTR has been the most consistently accurate factory rifle I have ever shot.
In the LTR the69 Sierra MatchKings shoot extremely well with 22.9 - 23.0 of H322 or Benchmark. Rem 7 1/2 primer with the H322 and CCI-BR4 with Benchmark although the much less expensive CCI 400 shows promise.
The 55 Berger Match or 55 Match Varmint has given me remarkable accuracy in the LTR with 25.0 of H335 and Rem 7 1/2 or 24.0 Benchmark with CCI BR-4 or Rem 7 1/2.

Well------- Remington is buying up all the American gun companies, INCLUDING DPMS. They just acquired Marlin, which includes NEF and H&R. Guess where they got the VTR!? Fluting the barrel, single stage trigger and some cammo paint are a few changes from a standard AR type rifle. At $1145.00 retail, I doubt very many will be sold.

Sorry I should have specified, it is the bolt action VTR that I was interested in. Up here (Kanada peoples republic of) we can’t use a AR type rifle to hunt with (bs laws)..... That is one of the reasons I have a couple mini’s which are still street legal. Thanks for all the suggestions.
