Could someone tell me the actual weight of a remington 700P LTR 308 with a 20" barrel?

Remington lists it at 7-1/2 lbs. I just don't believe that. I held one a while back and I loved it. I would buy one if its something I could take out in the hills for hunting. I think 7-1/2 pounds is something I can handle walking around with. The 700 sps 308 24" is listed at 7-1/4 lbs. The 700VTR is also listed at 7-1/2 and the 700 sps stainless at 7-3/8. The 700 sps tactical is given no weight.

If it is actually a 1/4 lb heavier than the 700sps 308 24" I think I would get one and use as a hog gun if possible.

A scale could tell you.Better yet,carry one around in your "gunstore" and decide if you can "handle" the weight.

Is a bipod part of your attachments? Thanks also for the reply. There was one at the local gun shop about six months back but its gone now and I can't find one to get my hands on.

No bipod, Mark 4 with sunshade and Chandler steel ringmount, HS stock- but not original, has a slightly larger profile. .223

It's still a very light rifle overall with the 20" barrel. I would like to find one used in .308 for the right price or trade.

If you think you want one, go ahead and get one, you'll hang onto it for a good while.
 
The only way I could weigh it would be to get on my scale with and without it, and that's not very accurate, but using that method it appears to weigh about 9.5 lbs. That's with a Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x scope, and a 6-9" notched pivot Harris bipod.

I used to have a Tikka T3 Lite, also in .308, and the LTR feels significantly heavier even though its only about 2 lbs. more. It's got a thick stock, and the thick barrel puts the weight forward. It's a very solid rifle, and the answer to my personal question: "If I could only have one .308 bolt action, what would it be?"
 
Thanks Dryhumor and MyRoad, I appreciate it. Sounds like the rifle is around the 9 lb. range. I've been looking to pick up a 700 bolt action and been leaning to a sps 308 but I can't get that LTR out of my mind. I like the question you pose MyRoad about owning one bolt action which applies to me.
 
I don't really keep up on the latest models, so the XCR Ccompact Tactical is new to me... it looks like a "civilian" version of the (LE) 700P LTR? It was not available two years ago when I got my LTR. The one thing I see it has that mine doesn't is the 'externally adjustable trigger'. My LTR came with an unacceptable trigger, and I had to have it professionally adjusted.
 
I put a Rifle Basix trigger in mine, very nice. I have yet to try the new style Remington triggers. I've heard mostly good about them.
 
Opening day is tomorrow and my LTR will be in the woods with me.

I had a 700P a few years ago, and it was WAY TOO HEAVY. The LTR with Leupold MK4, 3.5-10x40 is just a bit heavy. I might like a slightly lighter set up for deer, but this set up does double duty as range tack driver, SHTF long range bolt gun, and deer hunter (ok, that's triple duty).

If you can shoot, it can shoot and it's only about a half pound heavier than a quality lighter alternative.
 
The xcr I think is about the same size and weight but with an upgraded finish. Don't know about the trigger. I was told they all come now with the new triggers. I assumed the 700 sps 308 24" listing of 7-1/4 was accurate but I shouldn't assume anything about there numbers. If there is actually only a pound or 1/2 lb difference between the two then I think I would go with the ltr. I like the short 20" xcr and ltr barrel also. Thanks again everyone for your feed back. I have got to get my hands on one of those again soon. There may be an xcr locally if I'm not mistaken. I'll have to check it out tomorrow
 
I'm not sure that the xcr tactical compact comes with as good a stock from the factory as the ltr does...the xcr long range model makes a point to mention a bell and carlson stock, but the compact doesnt make any mention of having a special (name brand) stock that I can see. Just for the HS stock I think I would lean toward the ltr unless it is less than readily available and the xcr is right there...just my opinion, I would lean to the ltr if it were me...
 
The xcr is a good amount more than the ltr from what I remember. I'd like to see one to give me a better idea of what the ltr might weigh since I'm having trouble finding a ltr in person. But I don't think I would spend the money on one. It's either the ltr or the cheaper 700 sps 24"
 
The LTR costs slightly more than the 700P. There is one at a local dealer of mine.

I have the SPS-V, which is very similar to the 700P (same barrel and action). It definitely feels heavier due to the bigger barrel; of course, some of this may be due to the fact that the full-length guns are more front-heavy.

For hunting purposes, the LTR would probably be preferable to the full-length guns.
 
Ok I actually got my hands on a LTR and a scale and checked the weight along with a VTR 308, sps 700 30-06 and a cdl 30-06 with a wood stock.

LTR 20" 308 just under 7-1/2 lbs

CDL 700 24" 30-06 7-1/2 lbs

SPS 700 24" 30-06 synthetic stock 6-5/8 lbs

VTR 700 308 almost 8 lbs

Basically the LTR 20" and a 700 24'' wood stock 30-06 are the same. Actually the LTR was slightly lighter. All weighed with the same scale at the same time right off the self. Well as far as that goes I'll take the LTR for the extra money. I thought the VTR was lighter than the LTR but it definitely was not.
