I'm trying to install a scope on my .338 Win Mag Rem 700 XCR. I've had the gun for about 10 years, but someone else installed the first scope. I'm using Talley Lightweights, lapped. I mounted the bases but found that they're not square. When the flat portion of one base shows it's level, a level placed on the other mount shows it's not. (See photo.) I've swapped levels and bases (the photo shows Leupold dovetail mounts), and the result is the same. Should I contact Remington? Try to level scope relative to something else on gun? Thanks.

Factory drilled holes? I wouldn't trust Remington under their current management to do anything correctly. I would put it in the mill and indicate the holes with the DRO. Depending on what readings I get I would either drill and tap to the next larger size (common gun screw) hole (8-40), or plug the hole and re-drill. With that caliber the 8-40 is a better choice than the 6-48 anyway.

Edit - One other thing to check: Lay a good long straightedge along the centerline of either the front or rear pair of holes to see where that straightedge falls relative to the other holes and whether it runs out toward one side of the receiver or the other.

Put the Talleys on there and see what it does. Mounts that twist into a dovetail are very easy to install wrong.

its not a new thing, i bought a rem 722 in 308 made in the mid 50,s that has the front reciever holes off center to the right a small amount. i put a one piece redfield base with windage adjustments on the rear on it and it fixed it. eastbank.

You level the rifle first? Put a 6" level across the mag well rails.
"...they're not square..." To what? Gotta scope alignment rod?
No point contacting Remington. Your rifle's warrantee is long past. Only good for 2 years from defects in material and workmanship.
