I'm looking for an ammo maker that will reload my fired brass. I've read a LOT of bad things about National Bullet Company and a few good reports (none bad) about Mastercast. Any others worth mentioning?

I have been using mastercast for ~ a year now. I just purchased 500 rounds of their pre-made .357 SWC. I have sent them ~2000 rounds of .38 and .45. ALL of it has come back great. I would not hesitiate to reccomend or use them again!

Some folks have had issues w/National Bullet.

I never have, but then I am close enough to them to be a walk-in customer.

Never tried Mastercast.

Maybe there is an obvious answer that I'm missing here, but have to ask. Why not get the equipment and load it yourself?

About National Bullet Company

I bought a 1000 rounds of 38 Spl about 18 months ago and have shot about half of it and like it fine. They were prompt on delivery and no transaction problems of any kind. If you send in empty cases they will reload them for you. I think they give about $200 credit for 1000 45 Colt empties if you want them reloaded so it gets really cheap to have it done. You pay shipping, of course. For someone like me who does not want to start reloading it is great. Now I am trying Ammo Direct in the Memphis area. I have ordered 1000 rounds of 44 Special. $352 plus $24 shipping from Tenn. to Iowa. I did not get that from National Bullet because they do not offer that calibre. Ammo Direct told me that if if send them 800 or more empties they reload them...I think he quoted 22 cents a round for 45 Colt. That is, obviously, $11 for a box of 50...doesn't sound bad when boxes of the new stuff sell for $30. Try them.

To answer your question Daryl, I reloaded (and casted my own bullets) for almost 10 years but it got to be a big pain the arse end (children, not enough room, supply prices, etc...). So I've been taking a break for a couple of years now. One day when/if the situations change I may give'er a go again.

+++1 on Mastercast! I'm on my fifth batch of a thousand rounds, all .38sp range loads. Check www.mastercast.net for their prices on many configurations and calibers -- and yes, they reload your brass. You will save a bundle doing it, especially if you send your brass USPS Priority Mail. I send a thousand casings that way to Mastercast for eight bucks and change. Any other way I know costs more than $20.

I did business with National Bullet for two years. Good product, terrible service. I got sick of being lied to and dropped them. Do a search on National Bullet; a sobering experience. Mastercast has an excellent product, competetive pricing and excellent service. I just ordered 500 of their 9mm by mail. I expect to find the ammo on my front porch within two weeks.

Added 30 March. They just called to say my 9mm will go on the Fedex truck Monday. Did I mention that Mastercast is prompt?

I've been doing all of my own reloading for many years. It used to be enough cheaper and easier, especially after I got progressive presses, that I didn't pay much attention to the ads in "Shotgun News" and "The Gun List" for the commercial remanufacturers other than to note that there was generally a considerable difference in the prices with the exchange of brass.

With the spiraling costs for components and osteoarthritis to deal with now, I'm sure glad this thread came up. Where I live I either have to do some mid-distance driving to shows or a well-stocked retailer, or buy components mail/web order.

Either way it's getting to be less and less appealing and affordable. By the time you add in fuel costs and a little something for your time and wear & tear on the vehicle or shipping, "handling" and HazMat charges it sure eats away at any difference between the prices i've seen here and what I calculate my per round costs to be doing it myself.

Jadubya, what do you mean

"Do a search on National Bullet..." I do not understand. Do you mean do an internet search for complaints or a search on THR for complaints or what??? Thanks.

I meant to do one in THR, but don't bother unless you are patient. I just did and there is an awful lot of chafe mixed in with the wheat. There is a lot more on the S&W website.

A lot of these places offer base prices, but then whack you on the shipping charges. You have to take both into consideration. Also, I've never used any lead .357 mag loads that didn't turn my grooved bore into a smooth bore in short order. It makes me wonder why folks even bother.

I've been told that if I use Militec-1 on the barrel before I shoot that leading can be cut down considerably, but I've never tried it. They said the same thing about BreakFree, but it didn't work out that way.

To avoid shipping charges, I've found that some ammo reman companies will take your order and deliver at gunshows. Just an option to explore FWIW.

+1 on precision cartridge. They give you a brass credit on any brass they load and they offer Total Copper Jacketed bullets for less lead vapor. Generally good prices and service

Regarding Ammo Direct

one last time. I had just ordered a 1000 rounds of 44 Special when this thread started. I cannot verify the quality of their ammo but can say that I ordered the ammo by phone on a Tuesday and had to snail mail in a standard form that I am over 21, etc. and my ID. The ammo was delivered to my door step by UPS 8 days later. The ammo was about $352 new, not reloaded, and the shipping was $20 and change, Memphis area to Eastern Iowa. So, they appear to be prompt filling orders. I do not yet have the gun for which I bought this ammo, as it is on layaway. The ammo came in tray boxes of 50 rounds each. This is a small thing perhaps but nice, because one company sent me 1000 rounds in plastic bags of 100 each. That was fine, also, but not quite as convenient.

Oh, one last thing. They told me that when I have shot up this ammo I can send in the empties and they will reload them for 22 cents a round plus shipping. That is $11 a box of 50. They require a 800 round minimum to do this.

moewadle-When I ordered from ammodirect for the first time I registered with them on the net and was able to bypass all the mail forms and ID check now I have a password ans just order direct from their website. Shipping for my last order of 600 rounds was 16 dollars.

Do Not Buy From National Bullet Co. !!! They had my brass for 6 Months. They gave me every excuse under the sun. They used to be a very good Co. with good product. Their service has nose dived and they plain out SUCK the big one. I had to go to East Lake Police and talk to a Detective who had a little talk with NBC and they finally sent my money and half my brass back. The Detective told me I was the 5Th guy that contacted his Department with a complaint. I now deal with Mastercast Bullet Co. and all so have had one order threw Accuswage Ammunition both are very good to do business with.
