Title says it all; Remington 5R or Ruger M77 Hawkeye Long Range Target in 300WM? Its one or the other. There are many other models to choose from that are slick. I have already settled on one of these two.

The Ruger has a nice action with good accuracy. The stock is adjustable and the price at just over 1K isn't so bad. Leaving me with 1K extra for a good scope. It has a factory muzzle break. My GSR has a nice break and the action is pretty good, although I did do a trigger job on it.

The 5R is made locally. Keep my friend employed a little bit longer at the arms. During the Iraq war he worked on the sniper versions of these. Non adjustable stock, but I already have one in 308 and its pretty sweet accuracy wise. Just a hair lower in price than the Ruger.

I absolutely love Ruger’s, only out of nostalgia, and the M77’s are very accurate compared to some eras of the past, but I would typically buy a Rem 700 over a Ruger, and will always recommend such.

I have always had a love affair with the Mauser action. The Ruger 77 has basically a Mauser action. For that reason alone I've owned a few in 30-06, .270 and now .280. It is a finely finished rifle with little or no shortcuts taken. I can put holes in holes with it at 100 yards.
My close friend and hunting companion will use nothing but the 700 Remington. He too can put holes in holes.

I sure do like my GSR. I did swap out the trigger which was well worth it. The controlled feed is pretty nice.

If it absolutely positively has to work buy the Ruger. If you want to hit stuff at long range buy the Remington. Or a 3rd option . You can do better than Remington

I was born in Ilion. My uncle and grandfather both retired from the arms. My friend puts them together. My current 5R is pretty accurate. So I have a certain attachment to locally made. Yes there are other choices that I have already considered that are pretty good. The controlled feed on the Ruger is a good plus when it just has to work.

Remington. Served me well on 5 continents in various guises, and there is a lot of support both from Remington and the after market on just about every component.

I'd go with Remington. It will help your local economy going and keep your friends and neighbors employed. Also if the rem is less expensive you will have more dollars to accessorize.

Are you going to be hinting dangerous game if not you don't need crf with the rem you can single round feed while at range on the bench. Not easily doable with crf rifles.

All Ruger bolt guns can be single fed - the original M77’s were and new Americans and Precision’s are push feed, and the M77 MkII and Hawkeye’s are controlled round PUSH feed - the extractor is beveled to allow dropping one in the port. It does take a bit more closing force than a normal push feed, but they’ll swallow rounds just the same.

I stand corrected thank you. I have limited experience with the m77 it was an early 90's rifle I will not belittle the rifle bit it was only in my safe for a couple months. I've heard good things about ear and rap so may eventually give ruger rifles another shot in the future.

I used to be a remington guy, and still recommend them if you can handle the gun before buying to check for any qc issues.

I LIKE the 77s, and for mid weight hunting guns Ill happily chose them, for what you want tho I think the Rems a better option.

This may not be much use......
As is? Ruger, listed stock, crpf, and Ruger quality.
Open to modification? Remage, with at-1 stock +local business.

The Ruger has an advantage in that it already has rings and rail. The HS Precision Stock on the Remington is pretty good since I already have one, but I sold it favor of a KRG. Got a good price by the way. The DMZ Mount I have on my existing 5R would be what I would use with the Remington. Thanks for the input. I have to go to Shreveport LA and Nashville, TN next week for work. I will get what I want when I get back from the trip. I have some time left to choose.

Hope you don't have to spend $1,000 for a scope. That's outrageous, to me anyway, but I don't shoot extremely long range, only to about 500 yards and am not competing in any venues at this stage in my life.

Accuracy potential between a 4x and 20x scope, for hunting or informal target shooting, is minimal. I don't care if you don't believe it, but it was tested many years ago, using controlled conditions and reported in the American Rifleman. They compared sighting accuracy among open sights, receiver sights, a 2x scope and a more powerful scope (don't remember the actual power) using a tripod-mounted array and "judged" by using a much more powerful scope. Results were surprising...the receiver sight was way better than the open sights, and the 2x scope was somewhat greater than the receiver sight. But the most impressive fact was that the 2X was nearly identical in accuracy to the more powerful hunting scope.

I use a 3-9X variable on my hunting rifle, but when in my blind, which allows 400 yard shots down a narrow woods road, I keep it at 6X and when I have time and need to view antlers at 300 yards or so, will turn it up. Six power allows wider field of view for medium road or woods shots, but I'm not at a disadvantage for accuracy for quick shots as a deer is crossing the road at over 150 yards.

Wow to get a 400 yard shot where I hunt is near impossible. At my dad's where there is less woods and more farmland, the 400 yard shot becomes available. I plan on using a 6-24 or so scope. Probably match exactly what is on my existing Milspec and Savage LRP. I do find on my 3x9 scopes that I usually have it set in the lowest at 3x.

My local dealer can get me a Remington 5R for $899.00. Has it in stock. Nice price. Didn't say if it was Gen 1 or Gen 2, I would guess Gen 1.

I just picked up a new (now discontinued) Ruger M77 Hawkeye FTW in 30-06, and I have to say, I'm very impressed. It's very well put together and quite a bit nicer than the last couple of Remington's I've bought. Not to mention it came with rings, muzzle break, thread protector, and a muzzle device shaped like a break but without any holes to just direct the blast forward (not sure what that's called). Oh, and 2 allen wrenches, and some spacers to adjust the length of pull.

With that said, if you plan on modifying and heavily customizing this rifle, go with the Remington. There are far more options available to you. Pretty much every bolt action rifle accessory or modification ever made is available for a Remington 700, and that's just not the case with the Ruger. There is very little support in the aftermarket for the Ruger, which is a shame because their rifles (or at least their newer ones - can't speak for the older ones) are fine rifles.

I’ve not had the 77, but definitely like the 5r-I have the 308 as well as the 300WM....they’re both very accurate with both factory as well as my hand loads (and both were easy to load for as well-the 300 runs a Horn 212 eldx at 2954 FPS with a less than max powder load and no pressure signs..shoots 1/2” groups if I do my part).

Really like the stock as well-only thing I’ve done to mine is have a $75 trigger job that’s made it a really sweet trigger (I’ve done the same on both of my 5r’s...have a timney in my 30-06 and like these as well as the Timney).

There’s not a single thing I’m the least bit less than satisfied with either.

My dealer has the Remington in stock. The Gen 2 for about 970 plus tax. I might just drive out tomorrow during lunch and have a look. I know I would be happy with either one. I did replace the trigger on my 5R in 308 with a Timney. It was crisp but couldn't get it below 3 lbs.

I've not shot either, but I've spend time poring over the Ruger Long Range Target and I was -very- impressed with the component / build quality for the price. I will also admit that my last Remington (VTR in 223) left me very disappointed.

I would tend to agree that the VTR could leave one disappointed. They seem to make the Milspec to a much higher standard.

Been thinking about this all day. And on the way home tonight from the SU game (they won) freezing rain all the way home and 24 out (sucks). The drive was slow. I can hear the freezing rain hit the house windows right now. Anyhow I was thinking of going by the dealer and just bringing it home during my lunch tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad. It being the 5R Gen 2. I know the Ruger would be of good quality. My GSR certainly is. I liked it so much that a got one for my son.

I didn't get a chance to go by today. My mother is getting out of the hospital today and I worked through lunch to get home early to let the dogs out since my wife would be busy with her all evening. Good thing too. I had two labs running full speed to the door when I get home. Gotta go, gotta go, gotta was their expression. I will stop by and get teh Gen 2 R5. I am going to order dies, brass, DNZ Mount, and new rifle smell spray. I have a Viper HS Scope that should fit.
