Remington 700 or Savage Model 12?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking for a long range rifle for a little while now and thought i had decided on the Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308. So I went to the local gun store and they didn't have the gun but showed me a Savage Model 12 FVSS also in .308. He said the Remington would probably run around 650 bucks and the Savage was priced at 780 bucks. I've shot a Remington 700 before but it was in .222, so i cant really compare it to the .308 and I've never shot a Savage model 12. The Savage felt nice with the limb saver buttpad on it and it also had a free floating barrel. The 700 doesn't have either but it does have the hinged floor plate unlike the model 12. So basically, I'm asking you guys which is better. Thanks for any help

That's a really simple question....get the Savage! The SPS-V is not a bad rifle, if it has no problems, but the Savage will more than likely be quite a bit more accurate without you having to fuss with it any! Unbox it and your shooting tight groups, as long as you do your part, right! lol hehehehe

On whole, the Savages shoot much better than most of the new Remingtons will.

You can change the bolt handle on the Savage really easy, also the barrel when you decide it needs it, or you want to change barrel lengths or calibers.

Adjusting the firing pin protrusion is easy on the Savage, although, I don't know why you would have to. The floated barrel is a major plus also.

A big plus also, is that the 12FVSS has a 1/10" twist versus the SPS-V's 1/12" twist.....the faster twist makes for shooting Hornady's new Superformance Match .308 178grain BTHP a breeze way down range! Your heavy slugged reloads also!

Only thing, that price on the 12 seems a bit high! They are around six hundred, dealer.

Or if you really want the Remmington make sure you save enough $$ for a couple horses to pull the bang switch. Remmy triggers are horrible.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I hear nothing but good about the Savage rifles but I'm here to tell you that I bought a Rem.700 SPS varmint, 26" heavy bbl and it is a stone cold tack driving machine. I replaced the cheesy stock with a not to exensive Bell and Carlson stock but that is the only thing I've done. (it shot just fine before). I have mentioned before that the first time my wife ever shot a center fire rifle other than .223 was with this M700 in .308 and she shot a 1 1/16 in three shot group at 300 yards. I feel really lucky and would not sell this rifle for way more than the $599.00 I paid for it.

I wouldn't go more than $750 OTD. I mean at that price he's getting close to 20%!
