I've been thinking of buying a R.E.M. 700 BDL in 243 Win, but I have been reading that Remington has been having a lot of QC issues. I'm just wondering if anyone here has any input on the matter or suggestions on a rifle purchase.

I am not a Remington 700 expert. However, when comparing them vs some similarly priced competitor rifles just under 2 years ago, I found several cosmetic issues on the stocks, forend caps, and white spacer (these were really bad, every one of them had chips or chipped paint) on 4 of the 5 Remingtons in the rack. It totally turned me off the manufacturer and definitely made me decide not to buy one online.

[caveat - I guess that's not really true because I plan on ordering a Remington V3 at my next oppportunity!]

I have a few 700's and the quality and finish has gone down drastically in the last decade or so.
Take a look at the Bergara B14. That is the best Remington 700 action for that kind of money and you get quality and features
that make the 700 SPS like a cheap chunk of iron.

Why get a new one? With a little patience and research on Arms list or Gunbroker (or, gasp, a gun show!) you should be able to find an older, Walker trigger 700 in .243.
I have a late '70s production BDL in .30-06 and love mine. I will say though, my buddy has a recent made SPS in .270 and his seems decent enough- both have great triggers, but I will give the X-Mark lever a very slight edge for zero creep and shorter reset.
If you're skeptical of the new 700s, check out the Weatherby Vanguard or Tikka T3. Also can't go wrong with a Savage 10/110!
