I recently bought a .30-06 742 from a friend but he could not find the mag for it, so it looks like I'll need to buy a replacement, my question is will a mag for a 7400 or 750 function in a 742 or am I better off trying to track down an original 742 magazine?

760/7600 mags don't have a lever to pull down follower and let the bolt go fwd (like 742/7400 mags).

But they will fit and function, minus the bolt release feature. I used several for spare mags for years when I had a 742.

I'm not particularly worried about that as long as the mags fit and cycle properly

Some magazines do not feed well depending on the bullets used. I like 165 SPBT's but because they are long and pointed they can catch and jam. Rounded bullets or shorter like 150's would be better. I find that carefully bending the forward lips out and the rear ones in helps. Magazines vary, new ones are all aftermarket. Other than that they are interchangeable.
