I stripped down my Remington 870 Police for a thorough cleaning. After I'd put it all back together again, I noticed this little pin and spring were left behind:

I've done this several times now, and don't recognize the part from previous cleanings or the parts diagram from the manual. The gun seems to function fine.

My guess is that this might be part of the safety mechanism. Might just be me going crazy, but the safety button feels slightly different. The 870 Police has the "cross-bolt" safety, which I understand is different from the 870 express safety setup.

So, is this part missing from my gun, or is this some leftover from someone else's project?

Looks like the detent and spring that should be crimped into a hole in the barrel ring. Their function is to keep the magazine cap tight, the detent fits into the dimples that ring the base of the magazine cap.

Take a look and see if you have a hole in the barrel ring... those parts shouldn't have come out in a simple field strip disassembly.

It's the safety plunger and spring. The magazine cap detent has just a ball and spring - no plunger.

Pull your trigger group again and look for the vertical hole at the rear. That's where this spring and plunger goes. There is a cross pin which holds them in place, I would guess you are missing this pin or it has broken.

All 870's have the "cross bolt" safety located at the rear of the trigger guard.

Some Wingmaster and Express 870's were equipped with the ISS or "J" lock, requiring a special key. I believe this was discontinued in 2007 or so.
