Not sure if this has been asked before. If so, please direct me to the thread; I've searched all over. Can anyone tell me the max barrel length in relationship to the extension tube magazine. I.e. I've seen the 10 round extension which is 5 additional. How SHORT of a barrel can I put on this remington so that the extension tube magazine ISN'T longer than the barrel. I have numerous barrels, but I'd like to know which extension will work with which barrel. I.e. I like using the shorter barrels for HD (Duh); but a 10 shot (5 additional) extension magazine tube might be longer than the barrel. So; can anyone tell me the max barrel length for the:

10 shot (additional 5)
9 shot (additional 4)
8 shot (additional 3)
7 shot (additional 2)

Obviously; all of them would be good for my 26" barrel; but that's not very practical for HD. But I've also got a 24", 20", and an 18 1/2". Thx... Mike...

You should be good to go with a 9+1 tube extension on a 24" barrel. I will probably be a little shorter than the barrel. Call the tube manufacture and ask. You need a tube extension that is 12.25" long to be even with a 24" barrel.

I think you have it covered . The 18&1/2" should take a +2 extension, the 20" a + 3 , the 24" a +4, and the 26" a +5 .

I make extensions and I can do a 7+1 for the 18.5bbl and 9+1 for the 24" both will be even with the muzzle.

Here is one of my 7+1 (+3) extensions on a 18.5" bbl 870. In my opinion tube extensions have nicer well rounded look when they are flush with the muzzle

I know to put these on you have to drill out the dimples but could you ever go back to stock?

You don't need the black spring retainer. You can take the tube extension off and screw your mag cap back on. By drilling out the dimples it also allows you to install a higher quality aftermarket follower like a Vang or Wilson.

Max, that is one fine looking zombie killer, loose the heat shield and it would be perfect.... JMHO....chas

It is not my shotgun. It was a demo gun to show my 870 tube extensions. It was sold a while back. I like HS anyway. Some do some don't.

Here it is with factory mag clamp and without the HS. Ask and you shall receive.

Thanks for all the info.I'll probably do some measuring, but it looks like I'll get the 3 shell extension. I think it will fit my 20" barrel.

Question: About what is the date for the "NEWER" 870 where they mention having to drill out the dimple??? I roughly know the age of my 870. But is there a certain year when the dimples started showing up? Also; while we're at it; is there a source to date my 870 by serial number or similar??? thx.... mike.....

PERRRFECT....Keep it clean and light. Don't F...I.U. with a side saddle.

Like I said it was a demo gun to show the 870 tube extensions I make. I personally don't own an 870. I own a Hawk 982 shotgun and prefer it over the 870.

I don't care for shell carriers.

I remember the first shotgun I ever bought was a Remington 870 Express Magnum that held 4+1 rounds. I really wanted to install a tube extension, but found there were dimples that prevented me from doing that. I did some reading and found some people file down the dimples to install the extension. Well I tried it and it took me two hours. I can say it is not something I will try again because the shotgun never worked right after installing a Tac Star tube extension. The shells would not always pop out of the mag tube into the chamber. I ended up selling it to a friend who could get it working reliably. My gun collection lacked a shotgun for about a year until last month.

I made it a point to find an 870 with a factory installed tube extension, and I can say I am quite pleased with it. I think tube extensions that are flush with the muzzle make shotguns look better.

I know many of you don't like shell carriers on shotguns, but I want to carry as much ammo on board as I can if SHTF. I keep a 25 round nylon ammo belt with my shotgun at all times because I firmly believe in being prepared.

Definitely some cool looking photos.

Was wondering. Was anyone able to figure out about WHEN the NEWER 870's had the "Dimple" that needs to be drilled out? Also; how can I tell the date of my 870? Thx... mike....
