Hey,

I have a Remington 870 HD (the one with a magazine extension). Does anyone know of any videos or websites with pictorial guidelines that show how to take it apart? The manual seems to describe the standard models without the factory magazine extension tube, as do the youtube videos that I've seen.

Thanks,

Remove the magazine clamp, and very carefully unscrew the mag extension by the cap. The extension will have quite a bit of force behind it from the tension of the extended mag spring, so keep a firm grip. From there, just ease it off. You'll have some spring hanging out, but just slide the barrel off sliding the lug over it.

You unscrew the mag cap, and the extension comes off with it. Sorry I wasn't more clear on that. When assembled, the clamp is there to prevent the extension from backing out of the cap.

Remington factory magazine extensions are two-part units. The extension tube unscrews from the coupling (which locks down the barrel in the same way the magazine cap does), then the coupling unscrews from the magazine tube. Lately Remington seems to have a gorilla working on the assembly line, tightening the couplings. If you have a strap wrench, that might help get the coupling loose. If not, slip joint pliers well padded with several thicknesses of terrycloth or suede leather to avoid marring the coupling should do it.

One trick I've found for getting stuck magazine caps off is to wrap a rubber band around the cap a few times. That helps prevent your hand from slipping.

870 HD Extension Reassembly

Take care when you reassemble the mag extension. Sometimes if you really crank them on tight you can run into feeding problems because the tube does not align properly or it is somehow cockeyed. Since this most likely to happen after you've cleaned the gun and not had a chance to test fire it again, it can cause problems since the fun may not function when you need it to. Therefore, may I suggest that you reassemble the 870 by putting on the forend cap first and that should be done tightly. Then gently twist on the mag extenstion tube until it stops turning but no more. Then re-install the clap taking care not to wrestle it on too firmly into place. Then, VERY CAREFULLY, load up the tube with shells and run them through the gun by operating the action. This will make sure the gun feeds correctly. BUT DO THIS LAST STEP VERY CAREFULLY.

I have encountered several 870s with mag extensions that did not function correctly and the problem could be traced back to an overly tight mag tube or barrel clamp. Also, consider investing in a stainless steel or aluminum shell follower as the skimpy plastic ones the guns now come with sometimes stick.

I owned a Remington 870HD and my coupling was so dadgum tight but anyways I took a good ole hanes sock and wrapped it around it and used pliers with some force it came off with no damage.

Here is a YouTube video on 870 takedown.
I recommend it for beginners.

The only things I would add to the video is:

1. The newer 870's have a different type of magazine cap.
This must be removed by pushing it down and turning it instead of prying it out.

2. Use snap caps when testing the function after you put it back together.
