I put 50 rounds through my 870 today and noticed something that didn't seem right. I would be shooting and when I pumped the action to camber the next round it sometimes would not feed and I could hear the shells in th magazine tube sliding around as I moved the shotgun. What can I do the fix this? Other times it would feed no problem even when shot rapidly.

It has the ATI extended magazine tube and longer magazine spring.

The magazine tube is an often overlooked area when cleaning the 870. It is easy for sand, powder residue, etc. to get into this area and cause the magazine follower to stick in the tube. Remove the extension, the spring, and the follower. Thoroughly clean all. The tube is a little more difficult than the bore, because it is larger than the bore, and a standard 12 ga. brush won't do much for it. I wrap a 12 ga brush with cloth until it is a snug fit, saturate it with Hoppes, or Sili Kroil, and swab it out thoroughly. I also clean the spring, and wipe it down with Sili Kroil or Rem Oil. The follower should free fall when dropped into the tube. You should follow the same procedure for the extension. You want to leave the tube dry, because any lubrication will attract even more contamination.

Good luck.

Also check for burs inside the feed tube. Try removing the follower and spring clean as sugested and try to get the follower to slide up and down the feed tube.

If the ATI is the usual two piece collar and tube extension, make sure the collar is screwed down tight, then the tube part.

You may have left a gap in there that the spring can catch in. The sound of shells sliding around is a clue.

HTH.....

+1. Remington factory extensions will do the same thing if the tube gets loose. I also recommend upgrading to a Scattergun Technologies follower, they'll help keep the magazine and spring from jamming up which is a lot more common with longer magazines.

Might want to consider a metal follower such as the one from Vang. It's a cup, so the spring fits into it instead of on it. And because it's metal it doesn't wear like one of the plastic followers.
