Remington Model 581 trigger

Has anyone ever had to repair a trigger for a Remington Model 581 rifle?
Mine is stuck and I having some kind of difficulty with it all together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with the 581, but I suggest taking the barrelled action out of the stock and spraying the trigger area with a good penetrant (I like G96 Gun Treatment but there are several others). If that doesn't work and you can't see anything binding, it will be up to you how far you want to go in trying to fix the problem. Some of those .22 Remingtons have tricky triggers, not at all as simple as they look.

I've never had one apart. I would seriously think about calling for advice about mailing it in for a checkup.

the rem 581 trigger is quite simple actually.It has an aluminum housing that is held in place by a tiny roll pin and the houusing is pushed up against the reciver by a tiny screw at the front of the housing.Often the screw backs out and will not allow the sear to engage the firing pins cocking piece.Simply snug up the screw,do not overtighten (as it is AL. houing),you will see that the factory pin punched the housing trying to lock the screw in place.You can do the same.

Well, I tried everything and the trigger still doesn't work. I've resorted to replacing the #*&*#!!! thing but all the sources are out of stock and don't know if or when they will be getting any in. I'm about ready to scrap it and buy a Ruger 77 22.cal. Any opinions??

Get it to a gunsmith in your area who knows triggers.It has one spring in it that activates the sear and the trigger return.Un less something is binding the trigger and or sear it should work.Has some one been messing with it ???

Outside of me and all I did was take it off the receiver and oil and grease job, no one has even tried to fix it. I talked to a former Gunnery Sargent who was a gunsmith in the Marines and he suggested to just replace it with a new one.

When installing the trigger make sure the sear is in the fired or down position as you may have it bound with the spring that works the system.It is easy to have the spring out of position.It really is a simple sytem and if it was working before you disassembled ,I see no point in replacement.Operator error possibly???

The sear is in the down position. The trigger was frozen before I took it apart. I was trying to to fix it or unfreeze it or somthunkun or utter. Now I'm setting at the workbench with my finger up my nose scratching my brain.

BTW, the Timney trigger for the Remmy 788 will work in the 581 and yields a much better pull than the factory unit. There is an issue with the safety lever, which needs some modification to either the lever or the stock.

581 trigger

I just picked up a 581 with a frozen triger. The problem was stif as a board greese on the trigger inside the alum. housing. I took it apart to clean it up but soaking in penetrating oil may have worked. A roll pin at the bottom of the alum. housing can be punched out so the trigger can be pulled out the bottom. The trigger spring pops out so be sure to work whare you can find it if it flies away!
