This is not a part to scrimp and try some shade tree gunsmith trick on. It is a tapered pin for a reason. If you cannot do it correctly, bring it to someone who will. Roll pins will work themselves out within a few shots.

I don't see how it can fall out it has a dust cover on top and a clip on bottom. I guess I could stick a flat head screwdriver in one end of the roll pin to open it more so its tapered.

I had four of my rifles out to clean and all four look like the previous owners replace the pin with some type of nail that do not look oem.

Do they work and/or would you have otherwise known if you hadn’t taken them apart?

I don’t have a 742 anymore to look at but is the pin actually tapered or just staked in order to make it that way?

Next question would be how hard vs ductile are they?

That pin doesn't look tapered but it looks used too.

One of these days I need to make a copy and paste like slamfire lol. The Remington can go from ok t unusable in a days range trip. Sucks because I like the guns, all the ones I've had shot very good. But once you start to see the ware what I like to call shark teeth time to retire the gun.

I've worked on many 740/742 series guns. It's tapered. Funny how you comment about
all four look like the previous owners replace the pin with some type of nail that do not look oem.
and yet you want to put in an even worse solution that definitely is not OEM, all to save a few bucks. I seriously suggest you pay someone to put the correct part in because you are NOT a gunsmith.
