Remington Single Shot .22cal from Great Grandpa Erickson

I received this firearm when my dad passed away.

Remington .22 singleshot. Says patented july 22, 1902

Any idea what model or if it has a serial number or where to look?

The one on the top. The other is my first rifle Springfield Model 15.

Looks like what is often called a Remington Boy's Rifle. A falling block style action. It is a Remington Model 6, or at least looks just like one. Should say "Model 6" and the serial number on the left sideplate between the trigger guard and the barrel.

The serial number will help identify its vintage - I think these were made from around 1900 - 1925, or there abouts..

We have one in the gun cabinet back home.

If the barrel is in good shape they are actually really fun guns to shoot. But stay away from the modern LR HV ammo. Stick with subsonic or SV ammo or even shoot .22shorts from it.

I've got a 6 just like yours with a slightly crusty barrel and yet it still shoots easily as well as I can hold it.

My "magazine" that I load from is a bunch of rounds wedged between the fingers of my support hand.

Noone from my generation has shot it. Not even sure my dad did. Guess i need to clean and inspect and find some real low power stuff. I am not sure what i have for .22 ammunition, not too much but should have something.

Every gun deserves to get outside and shot once a generation right?

Amen!

Along with subsonic and shorts there's also CCI Quiet ammo. The low 710fps muzzle velocity would easily ensure the low pressure recoil you want to avoid shocking the pivoting "L" block and pivot pins. CCI is the one I know about but I'm sure the other makers have their own similar options.

Good shooting with this. I know you'll get a real kick out of both the rifle and the family ties it brings.
