I'm looking at a Uberti Cattleman 2 in 45LC but it has that mat black finish. I wouldn't mind stripping and polishing it for a bluing job but don't know what will take off the black. Any suggestions?

The thing to remember is that blueing or that black oxide is a rusting process. Just about any rust remover will have an effect. Toilet bowl cleaner is cheap, easy to get and it will strip blueing off very quickly. Most likely there is some in the house now. Give it a try and see if it does anything. There is always the possibility that the finish is something else that has been baked on but I kinda doubt it.

I haven't purchased the revolver yet. I can't stand the black finish on a SAA. The sale price is right though. ARs are one thing but not on a classic six shooter. John Wayne would roll in his grave.

With so many options in the Uberti lineup I think it would be more prudent to find a blued finish model that is similar. You'll be time and money ahead vs stripping the oxide and re-bluing the one you're looking at.

That is correct. However if the price is right and it won't be too much work it could be a fun project.

I've looked online at the cattleman and cattleman 2 and they all have a good looking blue finish. I think it's the Hombre that has a matte finish. So I'm confused on what you're trying to do here.

Dealer has it listed as Cattleman II. Could be he mismarked it. I don't know really.
What I'm trying to do is find out if removing the matte black finish from a revolver is difficult.
I can pick this one up fairly cheap but I don't like the black finish so will likely strip it and blue it.

most likely a cattleman hombre or.......I forgot the name.
the CM2 look to be shiney blue.

the hardest part will be polishing the parts for the bluing, otherwise it's pretty easy.

From the prices I've seen on the Cattleman 2 with the blued and case hardened finish, I'd want to get the gun under $175 or so to be worth the effort to strip and blue this. You are proper hot bluing this right? Cold blue probably won't give you the look you are looking for. A lot of the Italian guns have something about the steel that does not take cold blue well and there is usually a very noticeable difference between how the frame and other parts turn out.

Was planning to do a cold blue. May just hold out for now and wait for another deal like I found on my El Patron 357.
Uberti does a nice job with their CCH frames
