Removing The Ruger Rollmark?

I bought a Ruger Mark II .22 long rifle pistol a year and a half ago. I wouldn't even have considered buying it if the moronic so-called "safety message" had been stamped into the frame. It was stamped into the barrel, which I intended from the outset to have replaced with a barrel from the good folks at http://www.clarkcustomguns.com

The Clark barrel is amazingly accurate; even with Volquartsen guts, however, the rest of the pistol is a dog. I'm sorry I even thought about buying it. I'll never buy anything from Ruger again.

I agree, Many Ruger guns leave alot to be desired. However, the single action
revolver is a quality item. (along with the 10/22). I am even satisfied with the trigger.I just want to remove the stupid writing...

All-Around-Shooter:

I feel you pain - I don't like the message either, and neither did Bill Ruger. But after having to pay massive judgments awarded in anti-gun lawsuits the company had to do something to protect themselves, and this was part of it.

Yes, you can remove the marking using a file and an assortment of emery cloth. If you have a stainless gun this operation is relatively easy. If it's blued you will have to have the barrel reblued, and also the frame if you don't unscrew the barrel. At this point a question comes up: "Is it really worth it?"

Also if you should return the gun to Ruger for work they will either refuse to do it, or re-stamp the barrel, or replace the barrel. That stamp is necessary from their point of view.

After saying all of this I will admit that if it's my gun, and I plan to have it refinished anyway, the marking goes. The whole issue revolves around a simple question. "How badly do you want it to go away?"

I don't think it was voluntary in any way on Ruger's part; it was a court order as part of a settlement.

I guess some folks go around tearing those tags off mattresses and ripping the pages out of automobile owners manuals, but I just ignore the silly nonsense. It insults my intelligence, but then I have been insulted by pros in that area, so it doesn't bother me.

All Around Shooter, I am with you on this one. I have done a few that all came out nice. SS is eassier because it doesn't need refinishing.
First thing I will say is at the end of both sides of the warning there is a horizonal line. THIS is deeper than all the letters so we will start there . You will need to draw file the marks out.(Draw fileing is useing the file sideways,It gouges large amounts of material) DON'T Start in the middle od the lines Start on the outside edges and work around the bbl as not to make a flatspot.Draw file a little from the top and then from the bottom, Stay away fron the end of the bbl and frame because you will need this space to blend in the work.Once you have the two lines 90% removed you can start tacking full swipes accross all the letters stopping at each scored line,REMEMBER to keep the file rotating and not to make a flatspot! When just a trace of the lettering is there switch to emmery paper and finish, Blend the worked aera in to the ends of the bbl and buff till even. GOOD luck ,this is easy Just don't flatspot! J.Michael

Congratulations, you now have gouged out a big area of the barrel and have reduced the value of the gun by about half, if not more.

Heaven help anyone whose tattoo offends you.
