I have an old (1970's I believe) Ruger M77 in .270. It was my first centerfire rifle, and it's a pretty, functional, pleasing firearm; it's also been out of production for a couple decades, and spare parts are like hens teeth.

Those familiar may recall that the two-piece bottom metal requires three screws, and the forward screw through the pot metal trigger guard cantilevers out beyond the stock material supporting the guard. As delivered from the factory the magazine box supports the forward end of the trigger guard. This is less-than-ideal for accuracy so after glass bedding the rifle I relieved the box magazine so it doesn't bind.

A few years later, I find the the pot metal trigger guard has cracked, right where it cantilevers into space to hold the no-longer-binding magazine box. Oops.

Time for a fix. I JBWelded a piece of ground steel onto the top of the trigger guard, and added cutouts for the trigger.

Then I needed to re-inlet the entire affair into the stock:

and of course, re-glass it.

Now it's configured the way it should have been from the factory. It printed a couple 1" groups with Federal 150 bluebox this past week (its favorite bullet), but I think it could do better freefloated, so that's next.
