Right now, I have a 3x9x40mm scope on my Mini-14. It is an accurate (for me) combination, as I can empty a 10 round magazine into a silhouttes head at 100 yds. and get 10 for 10, offhand. However, the scope is rather long and heavy, sort of counter productive and a short carbine like the Mini-14. I was thinking about something like a 1-4x. Will consider fixed power, but prefer variable. I heard that the Weaver K4s can be had for cheap. I am also open to a red dot sight- eventually I may get an Ultimak rail and put an Aimpoint on it- but right now I don't have the funds.

If you go red-dot, use one of those scout-scope set up where the scope atop the barrel (or use a long eye relief scope). Mounting a scope on a Mini-14 is not a good idea as the ejected brass pounds the daylights out of a scope - including Leupolds.
