As most people know, 4320 has been discontinued. Unfortunately for me, I didn't know that when I bought some for my .222. Even worse, the triple deuce shoots extremely well with a case full of the stuff under a 50 gr V-max. I've heard that Varget is similar, as is W748, but I'd like to try to replicate what I'm getting from the 4320. So my question to you, the brain trust is this: what powders are comparable to 4320? I know, many will be unavailable right now but I like to keep my eyes open. Still, I'd like some suggestions for what y'all think will be close, or at least maybe what some of you have used in the triple deuce yourselves.

IMR 4198 has been my favorite for my triple duece. I have tried Ball C2, H322 & WW748, but 4198 gives me my best accuracy albeit not the fastest velocity.

760
Benchmark
Varget
H335
Bl-c2
4895
Trailboss
3031
I was getting low on my 4895, so I was looking for subs, found BL-C2 last week, found some 4320 today...

If you're running Hogdon powders. CFE223, H322, & H335 should be close ball powders velocity wise.
If I had an option I would try 8208xbr or benchmark. Both run well in a volumetric, are temp stable, and provide great accuracy in cartridges they're suited for.
Look at Shooter's world. I've had good luck using their powder in other applications. It's usually pretty inexpensive.

I've heard good things about 4198 but have never tried any. My load is running about 3000fps, and it would seem 4198 is similar to that.

I'm not familiar with Accurate powders; any better than IMR or others?

Who makes that one, Charlie? I've never heard of it before.

I love IMR4198, it is a very fast rifle powder, however, even too fast for some AR's, and there are about 3 or 4 other IMR powders between it and IMR4320. I think if you are having good luck with IMR4320, I would try another powder in that same burn range... hence, IMR4064, IMR4451 (the Enduron replacement for 4350 and perhaps 4320,) Reloder 15, and Varget. AA is Accurate... and is also a valid powder source. I've used AA5744 as a substitute for IMR4198, and there are other AA powders that 'pair up' with IMR and H powders. AA powders are often less expensive, and seem to flow better than some extruded IMR powders, if that's important.

I almost recommended IMR4350, but the 4350's are in high demand by the 6.5CM crowd (and others...) and can often be hard to find, that's why I started to use IMR4451. Now, understand, burn rate is not the absolute in picking a powder, but if you are having good luck with IMR4320, I would probably start with something in that general area before making the leap to something like IMR4198. I also don't know if I would go with a ball powder like H335 or BL-C(2), and some Winchester powders, which can be picky about primers, although the small .222 case it's probably not likely. Just my .02 worth.

222 Remington was an original bench rest competition cartridge(1950) Designed for the sole pourpose of winning matches. It dominated the scene for decades using IMR 4198.

Thank you all for your advice. I'm going "hunting" tomorrow so I'll keep an eye out for any of the powders mentioned.

I talked to an old reloader the other day, and he mentioned that 4198 was the powder for the triple deuce back in the day. He'd had good luck with it as well, along with 3031, 4895, and W748. These are the four I'll be concentrating on finding. Right now, I don't want to try to buy online as the hazmat is almost as much the powder. So it'll be the local scene if there is any to be found. With everything going on, I wish I'd have started down the road to reloading long before now. But (just my luck) I only started back in November and had no need of components beforehand. Well, enough of that. Maybe I'll be lucky tomorrow and come home with some powder to experiment with.

I have had 4 duces over the years (still have one) I shot a lot of different powders its like salt and pepper they like a lot of things med burn rate. The custom gun that I still have really likes H335 with 52-53g MatchKings, 4064 will work too along with the other powders talked about here. If you where closer to me I would give you a couple of pounds of 4320 thats sitting on the shelf collecting dust.
