Thanks, that was interesting. I use to shoot on the NMLRA national range at 25 and 50 yards off hand. At 25 I was ok, even shot a couple of 100s on a target that size. But at 50 I fell apart like a cheap Chinese suit. It was the same target only at 50 out to the 8 ring was black where as at 25 just the 10 and 9 ring were black. I made master class, but never shot enough the rest of the year to be competitive. My Lyman NMA would shoot good enough for all 10 shots in the 10 ring with 25 grains of 3F. I have fourNMAs, two with the 8" barrel and two with the 12" barrels. Might have to spring for the shorter one after watching this.

I too own both Remingtons and the 8" is the most accurate but we're only talking perhaps 1/2 of the ball diamet er@15 yds.
My results. In quite a bit of shooting both revolvers were spot on with his.
The Sherrifs model is definately the one to get! Leather gear isn' readily available for tthe Sberrifs version and you'll have to cut a lot of leather to get a production rig to work I bought a couple Cablas holsters but they ndi Work out.
I had the oppurnity to try a cartrige converting cylinder in my full size gun shooting the shorter Scofield cartridges reloaded to factory 'specs loaded with a 255 lead R/ N bullet. What a great shooting setup!!!. I regret not having the Sherrif with me that day! It'd likely be perfect conversion!
The same guy also turned me on to 6 of his custom cast 255 LRN, tapered heel (for ease of loading) bullets.
I'm saving those for something that "needs" shooting!.
OverallnI have found that the standard round lead ball shoots beat in all my Revolers reguardless of caliber.
As a matter of note, I bought a Navy Remington but the internals were bad and it. Went back for a refund. .Actually therevolver was much smaller and hard to handle with any speed! A real problem if you needed it in a hurry. .. the Colt Navy has it all over the Remington there.

hrfunk begins the range testing portion of this video at the 11:15 minute mark.
At the end of the video he fires to determine whether it's a tack driver or not.
He mentions that his load is 30 grains of Goex with a Wonder Wad between the powder and ball.

Thanks for posting this! I’d never heard of this guy, watched a few of his videos and he’s pretty entertaining... I really like the one he did on weight loss. I’m in! He got back into his uniform and that’s my new goal. I had a 29” waist in those days, so I’ve got 7” of lard to lose but like he said, “we’re used to a certain amount of discomfort.” I’m not as used to it as I was then but... Semper Fi!

"Leather gear isn' readily available for tthe Sberrifs version"

Don't know if it's true but I read that cowboys used to stuff a bandana into the bottom of the holster to accomodate short barreled revolvers.

Just for the sake of curiosity, I would have liked to see the velocity compared.

Mike Beliveau (duelist1954) tested velocities out of a 5 1/2 inch barrel Ruger Old Army and a 7 1/2 inch barrel version. The tests seem to suggest the difference is not significant with round balls but becomes noticeable when heavier conicals are used. This is a link to part 1 of a 6 part series.

This topic had been covered on another thread here but I don't recall the name of it.

I personally find I can shoot a lot more accurately when using a hand gun with a longer sight radius than with a shorter barrel and less sight radius at the shooting range but both short and long barreled guns can in general shoot more accurately than than me.

I bought a Pietta Rem Sheriff mod in early 2011 [CH] and then my two adult sons each got one later in the year. We love ours. Some of my son’s friends got themselves one too. Young gentlemen seems very attracted to that Sheriff mod. I am, too. My 8” and the 5.5” go together like peas and carrots.

Pocono’s test results with the 5.5 and 30 grains of Pyrodex are much slower than what I and others have measured with the same powder and the 5.5” Remington.
