I can't see auto's usefully exceeding 50 cal but - what about revo's? Smith is - to best of my knowledge - up the top re cal. What tho are the downsides of going up even bigger?

I realize that we would be considering not only a very strong and heavy gun ... plus, velocities would perforce have to drop .. tho energy levels could still be ''up there'' around 1500 ft lbs or even higher.

With handguns I like ''big'' but wonder if anyone has made anything above 50 cal ... or even if it is a non runner?

I believe there is some federal regulation which forbids handgun calibers greater than .50 inches.

Well, if you like antiques instead of ultramagnums, there were some British .577 revolvers. Tranter made some, probably others.

A modern gun over .50 cal is a "destructive device."

Seems to me that about tenish ago Lee Jurras was making a few "howdah"pistols. In the spirit of those made for use in India to fend off tigers & such at VERY close range when the rifle was empty or too unwieldy.IIRC he made some in bore sizes around .60,& for some reason I think that TC Contender frames were used.I tried Googling but came up empty.

IIRC the recoil was given as sadistic/abusive,or something like that.:D

Sounded like fun!

I fire slugs out of my pistol grip Winchester 12 gauge. It's nice to have the front grip, but I could imagine a pistol-length barrel on it and no front grip. Before I added the front pistol grip, it would pop out of my front hand, pretty much like a handgun. Make the gun weigh 5 pounds, like the S&W .500 magnum, and port the barrel, and I'll bet it wouldn't be too bad. Don't know how well a short barrel would stabilize a slug, though.

12 gauge slugs are about .73 caliber. If you designed it for Aguila's mini-shells, you could even make a revolver (or use a really long cylinder, like the .45-70 BFG revolvers).

Bill St. Clair-I read in an old edition of American Handgunner (sometime in 2003) about the "EAA .72 Magnum." It was an SxS 12-gauge with pistol length barrels and pistol grip only. No stock. It was designed to use Aguila's minishells. The guy who wrote the article carried it around with him and shot snakes with it.

Thanks, Little Loudmouth.

There was a name for the 10 gauge sawed-off shotguns that some folks hung under their trench coats in the old west, but I can't remember it or find it with Google. Awesome short-range weapon. 10 gauge is .775 caliber.

I have seen pictures of a 50 BMG and a .600 Nitro Express revolver, if you're willing to do the DD paperwork and taxes. If that's not enough for you, you need a new hobby ;)

Google didn't come up with anything for me but I did find this old thread.
