Revolver or High Capacity Auto

You wouldn't say that about someone elk hunting.

When elk start shooting back, break into your home at O'darkthirty and hunting in packs, let us know.

But even in the face of uncertainty, there is a limit to what one needs based on probability.

Based on probability, you won't ever need a gun to defend yourself, ergo.. don't carry one at all. Problem solved.

That's all you needed to say. We can see where you stand on this. Some live their lives according to what they believe is probable, others live in the real world, carry insurance, keep fire extinguishers on hand, plan and stay prepared for natural disasters or man-made events.
But we're using our imagination here,
What's this "we" crap, Kemo Sabe? You are.

Then we get to the part of the curve where we have events that require not only a high volume of fire but also a magazine or speedloader reload. I've never heard of one, and John from ASP has said he's never seen one. But we're using our imagination here, so we can imagine that there might have been such an event that not many people heard of, though it's hard to imagine that considering how spectacular it must have been. Or we can use our imagination to think that we will be the one to whom it happens. As truly wonderful as that might seem, I think we can say the probability is low -- like the probability of having 6 elk tags and 6 trophy bulls lined up like a plate rack, but damn that low-capacity 5-shot .270.

You can trust John. I'll trust the real world.

That took all of five seconds on Google to find. High round count civilian encounters are out there. They are less common than low round count encounters, but they aren't imaginary.

I see my role vastly different than that of a police officer. A cop's duty is to seek out trouble and put an stop to said trouble. My duty is to keep myself and my family safe and remove ourselves from trouble as swiftly as possible. To some extent this might encompass removing a stranger from harms way.

Because I see my role to be vastly different than an officers role I feel the tools I need to protect myself and my loved ones are also vastly different. My tool of choice is a Diamondback DB9 6+1 micro 9mm semi auto. I do not carry an extra magazine. I chose the DB9 because a) it has proven itself to be 100% reliable for me. b) it is the largest weapon that I will carry every day.

To those private citizens that feel the need to be armed with 15+ rounds of high powered ammunition plus and additional 15+ round magazine for their edc I say good luck! Needing 30+ rounds of ammunition screams to me of someone that seeks out trouble instead of trying to avoid it... i.e. a vigilante. If 7 rounds of 9mm is not enough to allow me to remove myself and loved ones from a threatening situation I have seriously F*****d up in my judgement of what situation I will put myself into!

I will live a happy life if I never have to draw my gun on a person! The mentality of being armed for a shootout by carrying 30+ rounds does not compute with me! I am not a drug dealer, I am not a criminal, I don't rob people or hold up banks and I avoid seedy places. I will never win the lottery and the chances of being caught in a mass shooting situation are much much lower than being caught in a mass shooting situation. I will not be able to pick off a shooter from 100+ yards away with my DB9 but this does not compel me to need to carry around an AR15. If an indiscriminate shooter has me in his sights I will squeeze off all 7 rounds I carry... then either he will be dead or I will be dead. Some people suffer from delusions of being a Hollywood action hero... I do not.

If I were a cop I would go through a completely different evaluation of tools I felt I needed to carry. I will worry about that when I become a cop.

Another circular discussion. Everyone makes these choices based on their personal circumstances and experience. We are not going to resolve this issue no matter how many electrons we throw at it. There is no need to disparage another members preferences. This one is closed.
