I recently bought a Rock Island 1911 A1 and find it to be a really well made, if not exotic, firearm. It feels great in the hand, particularly with a set of Pacmayr grips. On one of my first outings, the magazine wouldn't load a full complement, wouldn't chamber the second round and wouldn't lock open after the last one. After muddling around at the range, I borrowed a Colt magazine from a friend and all of the troubles went away. I looked at a site of RIA owners and found that this is a common problem. Many contributors grumbled about the poor quality of the factory magazine, which is actually quite nicely made. On their recommendations, I bought several Chip McCormick mags which weren't nearly as nice. Whilst fooling around on my bench, I managed to solve the problem so I'm just passing this on. The factory magazine is indexed into the gun, at the bottom front of the grip, with a little riser on the bumper. The riser was a smidge too high and there were some rubber casting flashings left untrimmed. This pulled the magazine out of the well just enough to cause the problems. I cleaned the flashings and ground down the riser about .005 inches. Presto problem solved. Regards, Sidney

I love my RIA 1911 GI. I can load empty brass in the magazine, and feed it all through the action without a hitch.

No magazine problems with mine. It even works flawlessly with cheap ProMag magazines. Can't say the same about any of my more expensive 1911's.
