That depends on what you're looking for? Caliber? Use? In 223 I'd take savage, in 243 I'd take ruger, faster twist rates are the deciding factor, but for other calibers and purposes than deer and smaller game I'd like savage because so many aftermarket changes are easily made and I trust savage period, if either came with Mauser actions that would decide it in finality. I like ruger and want several more ruger products added to my selection but your prompt is too vague to be more helpful.
Because of the rifles your asking about im guessing your looking for a hunting/in formal target rifle.
Either will likely function and shoot as well as the other, mostly diffrence in the STOCK rifles, will be feel and price.
If you want to tinker the savage is a better option, as horsey said. Also as he said if your looking to shoot long heavy bullets be mindful of the twist rates offered.
I own both, and like the savage stock better. I have the ruger in .300aac and a savage 11 in .243
Still favoring savage in a .308, but I would automatically discard the stock scope, with that said, ruger may be more attractive because you're not paying for anything you don't want/need. The predator line looks to be NICE but either American or trusty ol savage work well, and some people think savage is ugly, but they don't FEEL ugly unless you're the target, fondle them both and see which balances better for YOU but otherwise I can't think of any other reasons to pick one over the other.
"...is one better than the other..." Not really. All commercial hunting rifles are pretty much the same. It's mostly like a Ford vs Chevy thing. Except for the MSRP is about $200 higher for the entry level Ruger with no scope or sights.
"...a .223 or .308..." For what? A .308 is far more versatile for hunting.
I have the American predator in 308, totally happy with every aspect of this rifle. My 223 bolt gun is a mossberg MVP thunder ranch, which I run suppressed. Also happy with it.
