ok i looking for another rifle strictly for 100-200 yard target practice at the range. main concern though, ammo prices what would be lightest ont he wallet to shoot a few hundred rounds a month with.

.223?
.308?
7.62X54R?

i have a mosin M44 right now but its complete numbers match and i dont want to bubba it. im looking for bolt action preferd that i can change stocks, add optics, and a muzzle break.

so any suggestions would be great. also if its a rifle that is common at pawn shops let me know because i hit them every week.

Thanks

Cheapest route is 7.62x54R on whatever platform you choose.

I'd be tempted to get a cheap mosin nagant that you don't care about.

Buy a $275 Stevens 200 in .223 and go from there.

I'm building a Stevens 200 as we speak. I paid $242 for the rifle and then sold the barrel and stock offin it and made back $120 of the initial investment. Try that with a Moisin!

FYI It's a muzzle BRAKE:rolleyes:

A break is something you take at noon and eat lunch

Why would you need one on anything this side of a high velocity magnum though?
____________

Why does anyone buy a 1/2 ton truck with a v8 when the v6 is plenty.

Just cause he wants one is a good enough reason.

Cosmoline,

Why ask why? As a friend of mine says often, "Sometimes it just bees [sic] that way."

for the price involves i can build a nice 200yard target 10/22 for under $500

That's even less realistic.

For less than $150 you can buy a cheap bolt action .22 that will outshoot all but the most expensive 10-22's

What krochus said. For $500, in rimfire bolt actions you can do a lot. Pick the right stuff, and you can get rings, scope, a few hundred rounds of ammo, etc and still be under the $500 range.

Still, 200yds is working that .22lr pretty darn hard. Should be fine a .17hmr, though.

The 10-22 is ultra cheap to buy and shoot. I'd actually get another mosin, possibly a 91/30. They are pertty accurate, but be sure and get a few thousand rounds though.

200 yards with .22LR is pretty challenging.

Yeah, you can do it, but with the sights set up an inch high at 50 yards (Normal for a .22) you are about three feet low at 200 yards.

If you really want to shoot 200 yards with a rimfire, the 17HMR is the answer.

With the scope zeroed at 100 yards, 17HMR is just a few inches low at 200.

Ammunition is running $12.50 for 50 rounds, but careful internet shopping will get better prices.

For a fun bonus, the 17HMR has enough velocity to blow things up.

They are LOTS of fun!

im not set on the 10/22.

i have a marlin 60 that im superstocking out with draganov stock, DIY trigger job/stop, and im picking up simmons scops for it. but i cant buy a bull barrel for it and such so im kind bored with it.

i was really looking for something with some kick to it unlike the .22 or .17. but still be cheap on ammo. ive also been looking at building a AR. my main concern is that i want a rifle that i can bubba out and not worry about effecting its history like a mosin 91/30 or having to worrk about scope positsioning and such.

You already have one Mosin... go 91/30 keep the same ammo supply chain. Seven bucks for a pack of 20 here in NoVa. That's pretty cheap plinking and if you're discriminate and pick one that still has a decent barrel, they're dam...... accurate. Just go ahead and Bubbize with an ATI Mount and bent bolt mod. Then a Wallyworld 6-18x50 scope for a little more than a "C" note and your poking the orange outta the target at 100 yards... If I can do it anyone can. I'm not that great!

very true. i guess im heading back to big5 again for the third time this week. tehy have a 91/30 in good shape. not matching numbers but i dont care.

ya thats what im going to look for. big5 has one 91/30 left but the price went back up from 89 to 179.00

the pawn shops have them but for $119-129 for beat up ones. oh well i guess ill wait for another big5 sale or a decent one at a pawn shop.
