Right hand/Left eye dominance

I know this subject has been beat to death. I want to shoot lefty but from reading all like threads no one mentioned if they buy left hand guns. I have no experience in long guns just pistols.

Do I buy a LH auto shotgun, ar15, bolt rifle? I'm concerned about the resale of LH items.. Or can I get away with RH long guns?

I'm right handed and left eyed.

I shoot pistols right handed
Rifles left handed.

Prefer left handed boltguns, but have/use right handed ones also.

All else... (Ar's, shotguns, etc...)

Standard guns.


It's a little harder to sell a lefty boltgun.

If shooting as a lefty, you might encounter some difficulty with the controls, special grips (which you usually can change) or where the empties fly on semiautos (across your field of vision, for example). You can train to compensate for this difference or purchase a weapon that is more ambidextrous. As far as accuray is concerned, you're good to go. Most firearms are made to be used by both LHed and RHed folks, not all, but most. You can train to shoot effectively with either eye or with both eyes open, can take some time and definitely practice, but can be done.

Same as previous poster, I shoot pistols righthanded and long guns lefthanded. Just handle a gun before buying it. Most guns can be used fine lefty. Bolt guns can be awkward but still useable. Resale value will be less on lefty guns BUT if you KEEP your guns instead of trading them like baseball cards, it's not a big deal.

I'm left eye dominant, and shoot as such with pistols, using my right hand. But I'm not so dominant that I can't use my right. So for rifles, I use my right hand and eye.

My rifles have scopes so dominance does not matter to me. If anything at lower settings i use my left eye to help track and close just it as i shoot with my right eye. i can not focus on both sights and target with open sights real well with my right eye but a peep does work well on a old rem 511P. Pistols all right hand, left eye for open sights but red dots can be shot with either eye. Just turn it up more for the right eye.

I'm right handed / left eye dominant. As awkward as it was at first, I've gotten really good at shooting handguns with either hand... I'm actually now more accurate left handed . I have to shoot longguns left handed. Normally I don't bother with left handed longguns, but did get a lefty AR (Stag). Never had a problem with handguns (though I've found the HK P7 PSP & P7M8 the most ambidextrious). Most lefthanded AR guys say they don't bother with the lefty AR and do just find with the standard model, but I like mine. I've seen lefty Remington 870s, but never thought any of the lefty guns were really "necessary".

I shoot long guns lefty, handguns righty. Bolt guns are a bit of a bother, but the controls on right-handed pumps/autos (shotguns and rifles) are actually great for left-handed use, generally (with the exception of the safety on the AK and the bolt stop and mag release on the AR--which can be used, just not as readily as for a right hander).

Since I'm right handed I actually prefer manipulating the bolt/loading with my strong hand while keeping my left hand on the grip.

I too have the affliction and after trying different things i switched my handguns to the left hand and red dot shotguns, scope rifles and remain right side for long guns.i could not get comfortable left handed with long guns.

I am right handed and left eye dominate as well. I switched up a number of years ago to Handgun left handed since I shoot "both eyes open" with handgun. But with rifle, in hunting situations not combat, I can close my left eye and am actually more accurate right handed than I am left handed with rifle.

When I did switch with handgun, I had to make some changes in my form but is was really not all that difficult to make the transition. I hunt with wheel guns so grips and ejection was not a problem. It did take a bit of getting used to with my Sig's but with practice it was not insurmountable either. Main thing was the mag eject. The p250 was my latest addition and has ambi. controls.

I'm a lefty. I shoot left-handed bolt guns, but standard/righty everything else. Revolvers and some pistols I don't mess with because the ergos are pretty horrible, but just about everything else can be made to work.

With the right accessories, AR-15s are extremely lefty-friendly.

It really depends on the particular gun and what you are planning to do with it. 95% of right handed rifles and shotguns work just fine for left handers. I only have a few left handed guns and only because they are specialized target guns and the stocks are only for left handed shooters.
Ar15, no problem, 870 Rem, no problem, Rem 700, no problem.

Thanks everyone for all the great responses. I'm taking a couple long range classes with this guy http://precision-applications.com/robert-sheppard and he recommended I use my dominant eye for scoped rifles. I really want to learn the right way, so thanks again everyone!!
