righty AR for left eye dominant shooter

So I'm thinking of getting an AR, but not sure if I should
get a lefty or righty. So far all of my guns are right handed
but I prefer to shoot my pistols lefty, mainly because I don't
like to canter the pistol due to my left eye dominance and it
feels more natural when using the weaver stance.

However, I have had thoughts of getting a lefty AR but wanted
to see if there is anyone else out there like me. Have any lefties
out there had experience with righty AR's? Is brass gonna hit me
in the face?

I have heard that it will be difficult to find replacement parts if
something breaks.

Oh, and another question - do any of you shoot pistols in one hand
and rifles in the other? I'm not too uncomfortable shooting a rifle right
handed using my weaker eye.

I'm left eye dominant,as is my brother.We both own "righty" ARs,and ZERO complaints..I'd strongly advise against a "slickside" if you shoulder it "lefty"

Not to hijack your thread, but I've been wondering about this for a while now. If you are left-eye dominant, shoot righty, why does it matter? Do you keep both eyes open? If not, I don't get it. For instance, I am right-eye, shoot right, but I can switch to shoot left without issue but I keep the opposite eye closed.

With a "mid length" gas system and an ejector lump..cases will go a bit forward of perpendicular to the rifle,and in a carbine,they"ll go real close to 90 degrees out.

Not to hijack your thread, but I've been wondering about this for a while now. If you are left-eye dominant, shoot righty, why does it matter? Do you keep both eyes open? If not, I don't get it. I'm right handed but shoot left handed because of the eye dominance. Now, I didn't always shoot that way. I'd been shooting for about three years before I even knew anything about eye dominance and was corrected by a 4-H instructor. I made the switch and everything was a bit awkward at first but after a few times shooting, it became second nature and was much more comfortable than when I was shooting with the "wrong" hand. Yes, I shot/shoot with both eyes open since it doesn't reduce the script.

But to get the question of the OP, I've shot a right handed AR in service rifle matches for about a year now with no problems at all. Heck, I've even managed to get a couple of "master" level scores with it. As for brass hitting you in the face, no, it won't at least I've never had the problem. You might get distracted by brass flying across your field of vision but that's about it.

I'm right handed but left eye dominant. I shoot lefty with a right handed AR. Works great never a problem. On another front I shoot a right handed bow and I'm going to go with a lefty so I don't have to bend my head so far to the right.

First-don't handicap yourself, shoot lefty and use your better eye.


Many folks find no problems with shooting a standard AR (with its built in deflector) from the left shoulder. Some insist on haveing a left handed Stag Arms.

Stag is a big company , parts are usually not hard to get,the fear is that in a SHTF situation the left handed parts could be tough . I would think keeping a few spares on hand would even out this risk . The lowers are the same so in a extreme situation you could get a new upper and be back in buisness. I am not sure what the avaiability of the parts has been recently.

Another concern for me is that the lefty guns are not compatable with rimfire conversions. You could mount a dedicated Spikes rimfire upper but the drop in conversions would not work in your lefty upper.

I would suggest giving a standard AR a shoot from your left shoulder. if you just can't stand it you could sell your upper and replace it with a Stag lefty. AR stuff holds its resale value pretty well so It might only cost you $75 to $100 to trade the upper out

right hand/ left eye
223 has so little recoil and i face my shoulders at 1:30 to my target at 12 o'clock. this puts my left arm tucked onto the side of my ribcage and as an upside reduces stringing caused by breathing. it puts the sights in line with my left eye. minor sling adjustment and all is good.

I'm left handed and left eyed but ever since I was a child I have always shot my guns right handed (both rifles & handguns) with my right eye with rifles and left eye with handguns. You can train yourself to do it, but I guess after so many years it just seems normal to me.

Get the Stag LH AR platform. Shoot from the left shoulder with your dominant eye. Accuracy will almost certainly be better using the dom eye for sighting.

If, for some reason, you can't use the LH upper, the Stag lower is perfectly able to accept a RH upper. But, why not go with what fits you in the first place? After all, people who like to do things the hard way are usually called masochists.

Right handed,..left eyed. Shot handguns dominant right handed, rifles, shotguns and bows left handed. Used Issued "AR's" and M-14's for a lot of years left handed. Get the deflector shield to kick the brass away from your collar and you're good to go....or learn to like the warm feeling of hot brass in your shirt. I do not and never have owned a single left hand version firearm....

My hangun front sight gets shifted over a little bit left. Im also compensating for a nerve palsy with a head tilt. (Feed on that thought for a bit...)

The shotguns rely on laser dot, I will need to learn to shoot left sided without the lasers eventually.

I have other eye issues that will need to be worked on; I made do with what Im presented over the firearm itself.

Practicing when I can, eating brass when I must.
