Robert Stack's Guns On Auction Block

Late Actor's Gun Collection, Other Personal Items Up For Bids

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Robert Stack was a TV star, but he was also a shooting star.

In addition to his Hollywood career, the late "Unsolved Mysteries and "The Untouchables" star had a passion for golf and shooting.

He was a skeet champion with several world records and was inducted into the National Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame in 1971.

Stack's gun collection and other personal items will be up for bids during a Nov. 9-10 auction at the Phoenix Club being conducted by Little John's Auction Service, which was contacted by the actor's estate after his death in May.

"Outside of the shooting community, it is a little known fact that Bob was a shooting champion, held numerous world records in shooting sports and was the National Skeet Shooting runner-up -- far before his role as Elliot Ness. Shooting was his first and true passion in life," said publishing magnate Robert E. Petersen, longtime Stack friend and shooting partner.

The Stack items on the auction block include his Parker BHE Skeet Grade 28 gauge SXS shotgun with a brass inlay inscribed "National Skeet Championship 1936, 20 ga. Runner-Up, Bob Stack, Score 97x100," a Ruger 20 gauge over/under shotgun presented to Stack by company founder William B. Ruger and the factory inscription "To Robert Stack from William B. Ruger, 1978" and Stacks shooting jacket with various team, tournament and police patches.

The auction will feature $10 million worth of antique and sporting arms, including a collection from Petersen; Barry Goldwater Sr.; and Michael Wayne, the son of John Wayne and producer of many epic films such as "the Green Berets," McClintock" and "Chisolm."
